Vocal Distorting

Hi guys!

I recently just recorded some vocals and it is distorted. Maybe I was wrong with my settings on my ART preamp but the feed going in didn't peak at all in the red. I was wanting to know what peeps do when recording vocals. I mean, in order to hear the vocals to cut thru, I turn it up and it distorts. Try to EQ that distortion out and then I can't hear the vocals. Maybe I did my input and output volumes wrong on my preamp? Any suggestions is appriciated.

One thing that has helped eliminating that same problem with me is the use of a compressor when tracking vocals. Are you doing that?

follow your signal chain backwards....set all mixer, eq, effects, every knob on all gear involved. to unity gain.
do some vocal checks into the mic, hit the mic hard and loud and adjust gain 'till it NEVER clips.....to a practice run through the whole song (hit record) record track have a helper or you can watch for clipping....after you are positive it's not clipping, you will be ready to track.....set approprate headphone levles to bring out the best performance, then turn the trim down a tad......worry about hearing yourself when you mix.

hope that helped

peace
