in this here post...id like everyone to list...in their own humble opinion, the "holy grail"...if you will, of the following subjects:
snare mic:
kick drum mic:
tom mics:
overhead mics:
vocal mics:
acoustic guitar mics:
guitar amp mics:
miscellaneous mics:
now...in this post, its ok to dream...its good to have your eyes set on the future so you can see where you're going...'cause who knows, maybe one day The Rolling Stones will want you to record their next record (haha) and you'll have the most amazing mic locker to pick and choose from, which mic are going to first for each of these jobs? feel free to critique and make suggestions...
my list is as follows:
snare mic: Shure SM-57 (i've never heard anyone suggest otherwise)
kick drum mic: Electro-Voice RE20
tom mics: Sennheiser 421's
overhead mics: AKG C414 B-ULS (or B-XLS...can't tell a difference...can anyone else?)
vocal mics: hmmm...maybe Neumann U87
acoustic guitar mics: any suggestions anyone?
guitar amp mics: the ole' standby Shure SM-57
miscellaneous mics: Studio Projects C1 is definitely worth checking out...whether its acoustic guitars, vocals, or overheads, i've used it for everything and love it to death...

Feb 04, 2005 05:26 pm i guess no one likes this thread? haha...well fine then...i dont either...this thread sucks
Feb 04, 2005 05:57 pm Actually, I was curious to see where this thread would go, myself, not really being a microphone guru, have few opinions, and have very much and "make do" mentality. I can get everything I need done with an SM57 if I need to, and I rarely mic drums cuz I have the best drummer in the world, Battery 2, that does exactly what I tell it to, so I don't need those...

Feb 04, 2005 09:52 pm I hear that with the newest patch for Battery, you can program it to show up late for your session and gradually slow down all of your drum takes. I think that for an extra $50, it'll sleep with the bass synth's girlfriend and then they'll refuse to work together.
But seriously, as a hobbyist, I don't have much of an arsenal as far as microphones go. I have a great dynamic mic in my SM57 and a cheap condensor mic in my MXL 990, so those are as holy as it gets in my project studio.
Feb 04, 2005 10:08 pm For guitar cab I like the Sennheiser e609 over the SM57. Fuller sound without the harsh upper mids.
SM57 on the snare is perfect.
I really love my Groove Tubes GT66 on Acoustic guitar, but I haven't tried too many high quality condenser mics, so I can't compare.

Feb 05, 2005 03:03 pm I just don't know enough about mic's to really have a list or opinion. I have one mic, an SM 57 that I use for everything.
