If anyone's awake at this hour...a question regarding double-tracking vocal

Other than singing it exactly the same way twice, what's the best way that everyone's found to give a good sound to a double-tracked vocal as far as EQ, reverb, echo, what have you?

Thanx.

Well I think I can maybe handle this one..hehe

I tell you what I do sometimes(also it depends on how much you want the double to stick out) EQ wise I cut some low out around 125-200 Hz and around 4-6 K. That way the double vocal doesn't sit as high in the mix as the main vocal. Also I compress it a little more. I just think it makes it sound cooler.

Reverb wise it depends on the song and what I've already used on the main vocal track. If I didn't use alot on the main then I use a little less on the back. I always add a smidge of chorus to the double vocal and a little reverb like I said based on the song.

Doubling vocals can be really hard to get exactly right. One thing I sometimes do if I'm having a hard time hitting them the same is cloning the vocal track and pitch shifting up or down just a little.

Or I clone it a move it off time with the other just a little. And I do mean very little. Otherwise you will end up with a chirus/reverby effect going on.

Hope this helps. I'm kinda getting the hang of some stuff but this could be bad advice..it's basically what I do.

I do one completey dry and sit that behind the other, which has whatever desired effects on it.

But i just clone the track to get two.

good questions.. being an emcee/rapper this is done often..

Try panning the main voice to the right a little or to ur likings but not to much then move the double voice to the left a little or to ur likings but not to much...

this creates an illusion that the sound is 3d givin both voices spaces to be heard.

I often add more reverb to the double voice.. i try and keep the main voice dry and natural..

some times i even do it like this
MAIN VOICE- Pan 100 Right; Volume -2
DOUBLE VOICE-Pan 100 left; Volume -2
ADLIBS-Pan center; Volume -6,Reverb,Rompression

*adjust volumes according to ur song

every song is diffrent so it really depends on the song

i have zero experiance with vocals (until next week that is) so take what i say with some salt....i am from the school of keeping the main vocals straight up the middle...if you wanna fluff them, you can pan the fluffs to taste but you definately wanna have a mono compatable signal (for radio purposes)....the "fred durst" outward panning effect is cool at times but 90% of every thing i've ever heard had the vox loud and clear in the center (think focus). then again, it's art and there are no rules.

peace
