theres a plug in thing on nokias website for making ringtones with cubase as i remember. what phones are ya composing for? a lot of them use straight midi, but sonys and motorolas often use a different format...

A lot of the newer phones have the capability of .mp3 format. Along with this, most phones allow a data cable hooked up to them so you can import your own .mp3s and wallpapers on your phone. Then you can select this .mp3 as your ring tone. So maybe you don't want Jenna Jamison and would rather have William Hung? lol. Anyway, I added one of my beats on my phone as a ring tone and also created a custom wallpaper that said RedAlertRecords.com. Everything turned out pretty cool.

You want something like that. The one I got for my Motorola V300 came with a CD full of ring tones, wallpapers, games, etc.

I like to program by hand, this is something i did about four years ago with a Nokia's composer function, it's Zappa's Peaches En Regalia, have a listen if you like..

lol, reminded me of a complete adventure in Zelda for the old nintendo, lol. But I guess all the older ring tones do.

I think i prefer the older ones, but then again it's fair to say i have retro leanings, just can't help myself. I don't have a mobile phone anymore, but i am drawn to those huge brick style ones from the early eighties. Pretty hefty and awkward though.

damn thats a cool tone! ive never heard this song before. the initial riff is way weird.

bizzell, yeah ill get the data cable somehow. the manual that came with the phone sucks. it says nothing about possible extra ringtone functionality, only how to download and buy the crap theyre pushing.

when are COMPANIES GOING TO UNDERSTAND and put a STOP to this general proprietary BS

A couple months ago, a co-worker of mine had a nokia with the composer feature. I put on a short rendition of EVH's eruption and a twisted version of C.P.E. Bach's 'Solfeggietto'

I know it's no help to the thread, just thought I'd mention it.

Hey guys, if you can record and export your own midi files, check out mbuzzy.com. You can send the tones directly to your phone wirelessly from their site. :) Enjoy

it asks for your phone number

riffgod, i need your guidance/wisdom!

my phone manual sucks. i can download ringtones (using verizons services) but the manual doesnt even say what kind i can download. im assuming straight midi. thats the lowest of the low. i will be happy with composing little midi things. anyway, you use mbuzzy?

yeah, I'm actually interested in this too. Right now I got "when the saints go marching in" as my ring tone. I'd love to be able to compose my own. I await Riffgods answer to Forty's post.

depends on what kind of phones you guys have. Do you have the old black and white ones pretty much or do you have one of those 3meg color type phones? Do not quote me on this, but I believe you can upload in .wav, or .midi files to mbuzzy.com and it will automatically convert everything for you if I remember correctly. If you guys know model numbers of your phones, I could check out and see if they have any info about downloading to them for ya. :) I know the clips have to usually be pretty short though. My wife just got a new phone at the end of last year and she can download converted .wav clips to hers through mbuzzy.com and I can download them to mine on a 3 year old phone also. :) Hope this helps you guys. If you have any other questions let me know and I will attempt to check them out for ya. :) peace

btw... do you guys have a download folder that things save into when you download ringtones..etc.? I have Sprint services and when you send something from mbuzzy.com it goes wifi to your phone number and you connect to the web on your phone to download it to your phone. Not sure if that helps also, but I was going to mention that. :)

mbuzzy says my samsung a670 is not supported.

but i know the phone can be sent ringtones through verizon. so this makes me think it's just verizon saying 'well sue you, mbuzzy, if you let our customers have flexibility and options without them paying us.'

I actually have a "hack" program that allows me to reprogram my phone. I set mine up so it will play MP3 files.

If you are just looking for composing MIDI files, you might want to check out something like DatePilot at www.susteen.com

Best of luck.

i have to call samsung and ask about those cables. how do you reprogram your phone? i think this is a case of intellectual property where i disagree 100%. if you own a phone you should not be forced to buy the provider's proprietary ringtones. this is the 21st century. if it fits in the phone, the data should go into the phone. all i want to do is write some stupid little rings. and they put a stupid little lock on it? basically to screw you? geez thanks verizon. here, let me gladly give you money since you respect me so much.

usually depends on the provider of the phone I think. To the best of my knowledge I think a lot of them lock you out from "customizing" anything that is not on their network so to speak unless you know how to get around that stuff. ;) I have never attempted to re-program a phone, so I couldn't tell ya much about it, but I know there are people out there that attempt things like that. *shrugs*
