Mixer to Computer, each drum on it's own track....how?

Hey all,

Currently my "home studio" is set up as follows. I run my drum mics (2 overheads, a snare, a kick, and three toms)into my mixing board where I get the levels right and perhaps add some EQ. Next the stereo mix goes into my compressor, where I'm using a light amount of compression. Finally, the line outs of the compressor are fed into the line ins of my PCI Soundcard (Delta Audiophile 2496). I have it set up this way because my mixer does not have an insert for the main outs, it only has inserts for each individual channel and I only have a two channel compressor.

Anyway, basically what I'm wondering is, with this setup, is it possible to record each drum to it's own track on my computer? Since I only have one RCA stereo pair insert on my sound card, I'm assuming this is not possible. My question is, if I want to record each drum onto it's own track on the computer, what do I need, and how do I do it? Since my mixer only has a stereo out, would I have to bypass the mixer completely?

I'm new to all this, having a blast, and learning as I go. If anyone could give me any pointers or insight, it'd be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Justin

Your need two essential components.

1- a mixer that has multiple outputs (typical called sub groups) and a sound card in your PC that has multiple inputs.

The exact number of inputs and outputs you need depends on how many different tracks you want to separate the drums in to.

I was running into the same delema a few years ago and I went with the "upgrade your gear" method. I got a Delta 1010lt (229$) and a Behriger UB2442 (300) . the mixer has a number of aux outs or sub outs along with direct outputs on the 8 mono channels . the 1010Lt has 8 RCA ins ( I got a RCA-1/4 snake for that) 2 XLR (mic) input(pre-amps) . It was was the cheapest way I could come up with to record a lot of tracks at once . Also you can run more than one Sound card at a time, so you don't have to get rid of the audiophile (SPIDIF out from audiophile to SPIDIF in on the delta 1010lt) .

Gentlemen,

Thank you. Yeah, I want that mixer that you mentioned Geoff. It looks really versatile. I have an MX2004A that's REALLY nice but I'm outgrowing it fast. Problem is...selling it, in order to upgrade. Well, there's always eBay ;-)

Thanks for the advice guys, looks like a new sound card and mixer are in my future. Now all I need to do is win the lottery. ;-O

Cheers,

Justin
