Old Computer Games...a memory in song

Here's another one I came up with the other day.

home.insightbb.com/~therm...mputergames.mp3

I don't really have a great monitoring setup since I switched to the Delta44, so I'm not sure how the mix will play out in "real life". It's also very synth-driven, although the guitars are in there for good measure.

And...unless you've played some old computer games, don't try to understand the lyrics. In fact, even if you have, they may not make much sense. :)

Thats outstanding thermo! The mix sounds awesome to me, really clean and clear. Love all the synth effects really brings back the old video game sounds well. :) Excellent vocals and vocal sound on this one as well. Top work there!

Well gosh, I'm really (pleasantly) surprised that the mix sounded clean and clear...I guess the new soundcard does make a big difference!

I have my good ol' Alesis Ion to thank for the sound effects...friggin' thing has like 40 of those. I kept trying to find a place to put the shooting sounds from "Asteroids" in but it never seem to fit right. :)

Having this new computer system has really given me the chance to play with the real-time effects in CEP 2.0 (which I couldn't do before due to lack of...well, everything). The vocal sound was a combo of dynamic compressor, a light flanger effect, and a notch filter.

I'm glad you both liked it!

This is fun. I like the vocals and their prominence. Nice use of sound effects too. I'd say the only thing that I really notice is that there seems to be a lack of the low end. I hear the bass line, but it's not really filling that bottom end to me. And the kick is pretty quiet. Overall, this is a cool song and nice arrangement.

I know how that goes.

That was the idea, coolo...I've been writing too many "serious" songs lately, and just needed something to have a little fun with.

I figured you (or someone) would pick up on the lack of an actual bassline. I went back and forth on that a bit, but ended up designing the song in what I call "Covered Bridge" style (owing to my Hoosier roots) --- basically, I wanted to create something with side walls and an overarching sonic ceiling, and not worry so much about the low end. From where I think this is going on my next album, it'll fit in well with a rather absent bottom...but I guess we'll see!

Very cool indeed. Agree with all the comments above. I like the way you are experimenting with differant sounds, and the arrangement is pretty good as well. It keeps things interesting to say the least.

Noize, the "experimenting with different sounds" thing is becoming more of an exercise in line-driven creativity, to be honest...

I used to live in a pretty big apartment with neighbors that never were home, so I used to be able to just crank up the Fender Deluxe and play some really loud, chunky rhythm guitar to my heart's (and ears') content.

Now I'm in a very cramped college apartment, surrounded by folks who tend to not appreciate the lewd pulsating rhythm coming out of my walls at 3 AM...or 3 PM, for that matter. So I've been having to stick to acoustic guitar (which I tend to get bored with after a while) and new stuff with the synthesizer, which I have only had for a couple months and haven't had much of a chance to play with.

Plus, I'm going for a more eclectic mix on this next album, be it synth pop, bossa nova, or what have you.

Glad you liked the song!

I think mixing up styles is a great idea. I have done it many times and love experimenting with differant genre's beats matched to another genres insturmentation. Like say the Bosa Nova beat you mention melded with some electronic synths sounds and a very distorted guitar track.
