Ok I'm in the market for the Yorkville YSM monitors, and on a really tight budget, I was wondering if I got the 2 monitors first would I desperately need the subwoofer for alot better quality?

OOOOh, Ooooh...pick me. (hand raised) I have the YSM1s and mixed my first CD on them. I liked them and thought they had a good low end and it will definitly get you by. They're are very well reviewed as good monitors in any price range. I now have Mackie HR824s. They look neater on my desk. :)

i'm not fimilliar with that brand either, but i can say the sub will not give you better "quality" but it might help give you a better idea of where low end is...most mixing engineers do not use subs because they tend to hurt more than help, by overemphizing the bass frequencies. if those peticular monitors come standard with a sub, then it might be a good idea to have. but may i ask why do ya have your heart set on that peticular brand/model?

peace

on the down side, having a subwoofer can totally screw up your mix if it isn't properly set up in the context of the rest of your system. I have said it before and I'll say it again...if you are just mixing for typical stereo recording, don't use a subwoofer unless you know for sure how to set it up.

If you don't, it will most surely screw up your mixing...in a big way...it will totally throw off your bass response either exagerating or diminishing it.

If you mix in a format that requires a sub (film scores and such, anything with a ".1" in the name of the format, then, yes you need one, but you still need to set it up properly.

Just my two sheckles.
