Cool Edit says "No CD" found ?

I am using Cool Edit 2000 on a computer with Windows 98, Pentium II, 512 RAM.

I know only a little how to use Cool Edit but have been using it to record audio from a CD and save it as WAV or MP3 files. I only do these occasionally.

But now Cool Edit keeps showing "No CD" in the CD bar at the bottom. I have gone to the Windows Volume/Record control and made sure the "Playback" CD option was selected and none "Muted". Also made sure all the "Record" options were selected and none "Muted"

The CD plays fine when I use another player such as WinAmp. I put in the last CD that I had previously recorded from in Cool Edit and it would not show up either.

Can anyone give me any ideas. This has happened in the past and I can't remember how I solved it!

Welcome to HRC.

Do you have more than one CD-Rom in your computer? Perhaps there is a configuration option telling it which one to look at.

Disclaimer: I don't know about or use CoolEdit, I am shooting in the dark.

Hmmm. I always just ripped CD Audio to .WAV by using File, Open (file type cda) M: drive (or whatever drive is your CD drive) and choose the song I want. If you do it this way, and Cool Edit shows no CD in your drive, it may not be a problem with Cool Edit at all, but a PC issue.

It's almost certainly a driver issue with your computer, or something else in Windows.

I had a similar problem with my laptop, which runs XP. Neither CoolEdit nor CDEX would recognize the CD drive as even existing for long stretches of time. I installed a few service packs and reinstalled the CD driver, and that seemed to clear it up.

Thanks for the replies. I do have an external CD burner besides the internal player. So if I put the CD in the external burner it will show it in the Cool Edit CD bar.

But I had both of these CD drives before when I have done this. Wonder why now it is reading the CD from the external one. We have added a USB hub for a card reader.

I can't find anything in Cool Edit that gives you an option which drive to read the CD from. But I guess I can just let it get if from the external one...

Guitar Lord - I only know one way to do this as it was shown to me...

But if I tell it to "Open" and go to the drive with the CD in it, it does show the audio files on the CD in that drive. But when it opens it, it I don't just save it as a WAV do I? This doesn't give me the audio graphic of the sound waves that it gives me when I do it the other way.

I usually play it from the CD and record it as it is being played. Then the sound wave graphics are the ones that look like grass. LOL Now, I know you guys are going to laugh at my terminology! Sorry for the ignorance!

If I just "Open" it from the CD then it just shows the single wavey line graphic

Alrighty Heartsong! I must say that you have thoroughly confused me! Lol. I would think, though, that ripping it direct from CD would give a far more Hi-fidelity WAV file than recording it. I've had no problems doing it this way through Cool Edit, and when I do, I get a graphic representation of the WAV in stereo form.

Uh....but after rereading my previous post, I believe I misinformed you. I actually right click an open track, hit 'insert', 'wav from file', browse to my CD drive and choose the song.
