Recording speed alteration

Here's a question that someone hopefully can help with. On a song that I'm working on, I wanted to try the old "slow-down" trick, where the backing rhythm track is recorded at a fast speed, then is slowed down, thus lowering the pitch (and giving it that ghostly warble).

I've tried messing around a bit with the slow-down functions in CEP, but I hate the digital mess of a sound that I get as a result. I used to be able to do the slowdown on my (now-broken) Fostex 4-track, but that's not an option.

So is there a way, via plug-in or other method, to slow down the recorded track while keeping the sound nice and organic?

You might check and see if there is an option for Formant Preserving or something of that nature. I know in Sonar it can be done by using that type of processing were it avoids the wierd artifacts by compensating for varients.
