I'm looking for a monitoring solution with speakers. Up to this point i have been using Sennheiser HD 280 pro headphones but have come to find they dont pick up (or expose) some things that speakers do ( i cant really explain what).
I have been looking at a few options with dedicated active speakers but was wondering, How would a fairly high end 5.1 setup from Logitech or creative work? I would like to kill a couple of birds here if i could.
Would they do the trick?

Jan 08, 2005 07:49 pm Not having used them, I don't know. But I don't think they would be ideal. A monitor Speaker is spcially made and tuned to produce a flat frequency response, as as to not color the sound. What you hear is the music, not the speakers if that makes sense. Computer and Home Audio Spears are not made this way and have vertain frequencies adjusted so it is not flat, which would lead to decepting mixes
Jan 08, 2005 07:51 pm high end consumer speakers are designed to sound good, whereas referance monitors are desinged to sound precise (big difference)...alotta people think studio monitors sound "better" than home speakers this is not true, infact as far as to what might be more pleasing to the ears, the consumer speakers will sound "better". i'd look into some of M-Audio's stuff and get some real monitors.....mixing in headphone land is pretty harsh on your ears, as for the surround aspect, use your speakers that you have now for the rear, and worry about a sub-woofer later, accually some of the smaller monitors come with subs now so check that out....by all means do not buy hi-end consumer speakers.

Jan 08, 2005 08:05 pm There are a variety of choices available here depending on budget.
I know dB uses JBL speakers and loves them. I know many others who use Behringer Truths (lower end of the scale) and the M-Audio ones around the same price I believe.
I reckon the speakers will help yer mixing NO END for sure. So, go for the best ya can afford. I went for some Edirols and whilst I've heard it a million times "They are NOT reference monitors" , thats what they were sold to me as. Whilst I agree, they are not very brilliant MONITORS, they ARE good speakers. That said, for what I do just now, they are fine. Cost not the earth (about £110) and sound good.
However, go for the best ya can afford and try to lsiten to them first...big key to success...

www.venuemusic.com.au/Products.asp?ProdID=5157
They are the truth one's coco mentioned.
If they are ok i'll go grab some.
Thanks again.
Jan 08, 2005 08:20 pm Aye, I reckon you could do worse. They are not top of the line monitors but they are good from what I hear. They are also better than mine so I too, may sometime soon, upgrading to these or similar.
As I say, try to hear a pair in action if possible - the best way to judge the quality of a reference monitor.
