SoundFont "Renderer"

Hey all.

I'm using a Mac, but will use a PC if I must.

I use MIDI files for all my drum tracks. Specifically, I edit the MIDI files, then use a SoundFont (the nsKit 7 at www.naturalstudio.co.uk/ ) to get much better samples than QuickTime's default instrument.

QuickTime can play MIDIs using SoundFonts, but it's a big pain. First, I have to use an OS-9 based version of QuickTime player to change the SoundFont, then I have to open it in the OS-X player to play it. In addition, QuickTime forces its own, bad-sounding reverb on my files.

Does anyone know a free/cheap program (for Mac OS X preferably, but again I will use a PC if I must) that:
1. Opens MIDI files and plays them through a SoundFont.
2. Is standalone (not a VSTi, for example)

What I do now is adequate, but it's really a Band-Aid solution, and that reverb is really getting on my nerves.

Well St. Dave, you should be able to turn the bad reverb off in the options somewhere in QT. IF not, that is really bad on their part. As for a SF player for Mac, I dont know of any right off the top of my head.

coolo is a big SF user and he may have a better idea. I will however keep looking around to see if there is anything available.

I'd be interested in a good pc app for this as well. I have a few midi songs that I'd like to turn into good sounding instrumentals, but the way it plays now, it sounds so computerish sounding, like the instruments are really fake.

dtwizzle, all you need is something that will allow MIDI to trigger sound samples instead of general MIDI crap off your sound blaster (or whatever you are using). Something like this www.homerecordingconnecti...tory&id=394 you can use MIDI to trigger real audio files of sounds.

Hey, don't know of any cheap/free solutions for Mac. For PC, you may be able to find an earlier version of a program called Massiva that was free. This program will import midi files and you can choose what soundfont you want to play back any certain midi part. However, you will need a soundblaster card to use soundfonts with this program. Other than that, all of the programs that I know play soundfonts are all not cheap.
