Tascam 414mkII tape speed? Help!!!!!!

Hey there. I just got a Tascam 414mkII for Christmas, and I'm having a bit of a problem. The machine records 2 times faster than a regular casette player plays the audio. Does this mean I have to go and buy more gear to be able to make the tapes play in regular casette players without being painfully slow?

On another note, this machine claims to be an all in one portable studio, but I found that another 2 track recorder is required to complete the mix-down process! Bascially, until I get the money, I have to have all the tracks be the same volume.

What I presume you would do, and what I did when I had an 8-track cassette deck that ran at double-speed, is, when all the tracks are recorded, you mix them down to a standard-speed, two track stereo cassette deck by running your main outs 414 into the ins of any stereo tape deck.

Or...run your main outs into your sound card's line in and use your computer as your mixdown deck. Then you have the ability to process your tracks and master them.

Snoop around HRC (or Google) for some hints on some free or cheap audio applications that will allow you to record a stereo mixdown (and then process or premaster it.)

That's what I was doing up until I went totally digital (about a year ago.)

Oh yeah, I left out the final step. Then you either burn to CD, or if you prefer a cassette, you hook your sound card's line out into your regular stereo cassette deck.

(Actually, if you prefer cassette, forget about everything I said and just do what dB said!)

Thanks for all the help. I'm using my christmas money to buy an analog mixer, most likely a EuroDeck of some sort. That way I can actually mixdown my songs. I've tried to import it into my computer through ACID, but the problem is, whenever I do, it gets way too loud and clips, even when I bring the master (both on the computer and on the Tascam) down to about one. Does anybody know what the problem might be?

Also, I've got a dual tape deck with separate recording and playback compartments (I stole it from my parents stereo system. On the back, it has L and R plugs labeled "Output(Play)" and another L and R plug labeled "Input(Record)". Is this going to work?

Sorry, I'm kind of new to recording with tape and I'm a total newbie.

Thanks in advance......

are you plugging into a mic input rather than a line in? they amplify and make things sound nasty...

Yes, you plug your 414 into the input(record) jacks on your stolen cassette deck :-)

Thanks for all the help.

Now I've got another question. Can anyone reccommend a cheap mixdown deck I can buy to connect into my Tascam after I've finished recording the tracks? Thanks.

As long as the heads are clean on the deck, use any home stereo deck...you could spend tons on a "pro" one, but it's not worth it in todays market...
