Condensor for drums

I just recently took my AT 3035 and used it for an overhead on my drum kit and I really like the way it sounds. So much so that I was thinking about using just two overhead condensor mics and a dynamic on the kick and snare and leaving it at that because I like the presence and acoustics it adds. Any recomendations for two reasonably priced condensor mics that are good for overhead and close application use primarily for percussion, but good for maybe micing acoustic as well? I don't want to break the bank of course, but any recomendations from people who have used them would be great. Cheers guys.

I haven't gotten mine yet, I will be ordering next week, but from everything I have heard and read, the B811's from www.appliedmic.com are some great overheads, that is what they are made for, plus they work on guitar cabs as well, they are sold in pairs at about $699...Noize and I started working with these guys and they are custom building a mic for Noize and I am getting some B811's and another.

Hiya Sharc. My first recomendation would be to buy another 3035. If Ya like the way it sounds, You're there. One of my favorite drum mic scenarios is two 4047s(which the 3035 sounds a lot like), EV 868 for kick, and sennheiser 421 on snare. This will get you in the neighborhood of the drum sound on Van Halen's first album. Another solid chioce would be the AT 4041s. I was looking for a little more "pop" out of my overheads, and bought a pair. Plenty of bass extension for a SDC. My first scenario is usually 4041s up top, and 4047s for room mics. I only mic the toms as a last resort. A couple of other good chioces might be the Sennheiser evolution E664. I recently read a review of them, and the panel had a hard time telling the Sennheisers from Neumann 184s. Pretty high praise, though I havn't heard them myself. I would not recomend the oktava 012 unless your gonna mic the toms. Wonderful sounding mic, but not enough bass for the 4 mic plan, in my opinion. Of course the reasonably priced studio standard for overheads and acoustics is still the Sure SM81. Wonderful sounding mics, at under 300 bucks a pop. All these mics are great for acoustics, depending what you're looking for. I prefer non-drednaught guitars, so I use a 4047 by the 12th fret, and a 4041 by the bridge. I think the 4047 brings out some nice bass, and the small diameter 4041 adds a little zing.Good luck, George.

Musician's Friend Links to mentioned mics...and thanks for your support :-)

Sennheiser 421: service.bfast.com/bfast/c...mp;bfmtype=gear

Shure SM81: service.bfast.com/bfast/c...mp;bfmtype=gear

Obviously they don't carry everything, but I like to link up to what they do, each mic makers also has several other brands available.

i use a akgd112 for kick. 2 sm81's for over heads. sennheiser 421 snare. and audix d series for toms. the sm81's are really nice sounding. i use them for acoustic guitar also. i would recommend them if you could afford them. i paid a pretty penny for them.

Yeah, I ahve been reading up on some of these and I ahve heard only good things about the SM81's, but like you said stupe, they are pretty expensive. I might have to either wait awhile longer or just make do with another 3035. I just like the sound it gives to the overall drum sound, but I want another one so I can get a stereo image, right now I just have the one overhead. Thanks for all the advice guys.
