In what order do some of ya'll record instuments when not recording live. I do all my instumentation and I first lay down dummy tracks and then after that I lay down what ever I'm in the mood to play. So how about it?

Being of the anal retentive persuasion, I almost always lay down a scratch track (including a click track to keep tempo), then I build it up with drums, bass, acoustic guitar, and electric guitar. Then I go back and add fills and solos. Then lead vocals, and finally harmony vocals. Sounds pretty formulaic, doesn't it?

Maybe I'm in a rut? :-)

I generally get rhythm done first, program the drums, then put rhythm guitar or bass (which ever one I have nailed first), then vocal, then leads. After all that I generally wind up doing the bass again cuz I have figured out ways to play around the vocals/melody...

Whatever works.

Every group or person is different. I have a group that is a very good example of that in house at present. The drummer is very solid. The guitar player is very good but doesn't listen well to the others. The bass player is novice. We started with recording only drums, while the guitar player played along to help the drummer remember the road map of the songs. Second layer was guitar, third layer, bass, forth layer vocals. Vocals and drums are pretty much solid. On playback of the material the group discovered that there a number of places that the guitar and drums are having collisions with fills. They never heard this in rehersal which is not odd. They are deciding which one will back off or change to make it fit. The bassist is practicing. Again the playback revealed some timing issues and technique issues that need work. So there will be some punch in's and re-takes to get things solid. I recomend starting with the strongest musician. If the song is a steady tempo the use of a tick tak track can be a real help if the musicians waver on tempo and if at least one of them can work well with a metronome. There are a lot of if's there.

Beyond that, the burdon can fall on the engineer; cut and paste the perfect chorus, fix and or fabricate to compensate for the musicianship.

Ya use what you got...collectively.

Thanks guys. That's great information. I usually lay down the dummies and the start with acoustic guitar and well... I go haywire there. I really don't know where to go cause I want to do them all. ha ha ha
Thanks for the repies!

Yeah, I'm like Jim. I always do drums, then acoustic guitars, then electric guitars, then lead guitars, then vocals, then backup vocals. Then, if I can beg or borrow a bass, I'll lay that down, although I'd prefer to track it after the drums.

I have to do a guide vocal first while playing along with my acoustic Guitar, I play to a drum loop which I've already sorted in fruity.
I like to work around the vocal, the bass, Lead riffs and drum fills then come along easier.

Lost for words with all to say.

I'm different. We do all the drums along with bass and either guitar or keyboard, depends who mainly leads it. Our drummer is the best I have ever heard so he normally nails it good in 1 or 2 takes. Most of the time, we do the guitar over to get a better sound or better licks. Sometimes do the keys over or the bass. But mainly getting the rhythm down first and then layering it. Guess I'm not different after all?

not different at all, if I actually had a band, thats how I'd do it, but I am only me, so I can only do one at a time...

First we lay down the drums (with one guitar or bass playing along but not being picked up by the mics, very insignificant amount of bleed, just so that the drummer knows where he is), no click track. Add Guitars then Bass, then vocals, then add other sound effect tracks last.
