has anyone here mic'd a violin before? if so how did they do it. i have a project going on right now where these guys are bringing in a violin player. is it ok to use a sm 57 on one of those or is it better to use a condensor?

I have not done it personally, but I would say a condeser mic would be best, maybe stereo. I would go about it similar to micing an acoustic guitar.

It might be cool to use both. Put the SM57 on the instrument close, then drop a condensor back a foot or two from the instrument and record them to different tracks. Might give you some real depth of sound.
