Ok, here's the deal...
Last time I was here I was looking for new sound card ideas and help on purchasing a mixing board.
Needless to say, a new soundcard is installed, the mixing board is installed, an external hard drive is installed, we're all wired and ready to go EXCEPT.........

I have no idea how to record vocals over the top of a previously recorded guitar part WHILE BEING ABLE to hear the guitar. I have an out from the sound card into the back of my stereo reciever to use as a monitor of sorts, so I know I can record vocals cleanly if I turn off all the speakers, but how do I listen to the guitar and put vocals over the top? Using headphones into the computer but where is this application undertaken using cool edit pro?

Thanks for you help, if you can...

I drew this up for my sister who is just setting up recording in AZ.

There may be differences in your setup, I don't know what connections the Audigy has, but you can figure them out as you go.

You'll have the input channels going to the PC via the channel inserts, (or subs, or aux sends), and have the pre-recorded signal coming back into the mixer through the stereo lines (on the sheet, channel 3 & 4). In the software you can disable sending the incoming signal from going back out, and use the mixer incoming signal (line 1 and/or 2) to hear yourself singing or whatever your doing.

Then it's just mixing the new signal (1, 2) with the pre-recorded signal (3,4) and sending it out the mains to the stereo receiver you mentioned. Then you can hear all at once, plus mix the monitor levels right on the mixer. Set the trim for your incoming gain, and mix the levels of newly recorded signal later in the PC. Just make sure you don't drive the signal too hard as to make cliping (which wont come out of the recording).

there's a better document in the articles here on this site:

Well, that will take me a while to figure out but I'll keep trying. Sounds like chinese algebra to me.
Thanks for your input.

sorry bout that,

For your setup:

PC sound card out should go into a stereo pair on the mixer. I like to use the last stereo pair on the mixer.

Mains out of mixer should go into the stereo receiver.

Headphones should plug into the headphone jack of stereo receiver.

This way the mixer has two signals coming into the mixer, 1> one from the brand new vocals, and 2> one from the pre-recorded guitar.

These two signals get mixed together and sent to the stereo receiver, which you can hear via headphones. Use headphones so you're not re-recording sounds twice.

Hope that's clearer. Keep at it. I was baffled too.
