Where do I go from here? (Attack of the killer newbie!)

Well, my foray into the wild and fascinating world of computer based music production has just begun, thanks largely in part to this auction I just won.

cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI...DME:B:EOAB:US:6

The array of bundled software is intriguing, if not a bit overwhelming. I am considering focusing solely on cubase sx2.2 for my sequencing needs to begin with. I am still pondering what midi controller/hardware synthesizer to purchase...being a novice, I find it difficult to make a decision.
Can any of you recommend a fairly inexpesive, but capable soundcard? What exactly is an audio interface? I am clueless as to what monitors I should purchase. Can I get away with simply having one monitor to begin with? If I begin with one monitor, should it be an active monitor?
What else am I missing that is essential to start cranking out some tunes on my computer? I have read a few tutorials on basic home studio setups, but unfortunately, I am still a bit unclear as to how everything interfaces. I apologize for my ignorance, but I suppose we all have to start at the bottom at some point.
I realize that I am asking for a lot of information, so whatever information, and or advice anyone feels like offering would be truly appreciated. Thanks!

Well, that's a pretty nice computer setup. To start at the top, an audio interface is pretty much the same thing as a sound card (or at least I think it is). As for what kind of sound card is good, it will depend on what purpose you need it for. Are you planning on recording instruments or vocals, and if so, how many?

Monitors are expensive, and I have not yet saved up for those, so I will let some one else handle that question (though I don't think you can get just one monitor at a time). As for keyboard controllers/synths, it really depends on if you need more sounds than already come with your computer. It looks like your computer already comes with a gang of sounds in it, between Reason and Native Instrumets, and the Korg VSTs. So, I would recommend a keyboard controller. I personally use and love the M-Audio Radium 49. You can plug this into one of your USB slots, install the drivers, and presto you are ready to play with midi.

You may also want to take a look at the FAQs here. They cover quite a bit.

Thank you so much for the reply. I appreciate you taking the time to welcome and help someone new to the world of music creation. I suppose studio monitors can wait. I'd like to keep things as relatively affordable and simple as I can...at least to begin with.
