Newbie with Midi problem

Hello Everyone..
I am new to this forum, but there appears to be some smart folks here, and I am a real need of help as I have asked many people and havent received any help
I have a Korg Triton Rack and a Roland MV8000.
I am using the sequencer on the MV while using the Triton sounds,
So here's my problem, I want to lay down a sound on the first track/channel for example lets say a piano, then I will go to the second channel/track to lay down another sound for example a drum sound, so I will switch to the drum sound, but my first channel sounds will change also to drums and not stay piano???
I have spent over a month trying to figure this out, I know there must be one small thing I am missing,,,is there any help for me in this area???
