I was just wondering whether effect racks is a must for a home recording studio???If it is what are the basic effects it should have??

The only rack effect I seriously think is a must have is a compressor, and maybe a reverb, most other effects can be done realitively easy with the PC itself.

I am saying this assuming your studio is on a PC consiering your profile says that is your interest.

Keep in mind the following is my OPINION.

If you record acoustic drums or bass guitar:
1. Compressors. One for each drum/bass mic/directbox. You can buy some units that have up to 8 compressors in one piece of rack gear. I use Behringer Autocoms. They have two compressors per unit. And although not the best out there, they are pretty clean units for less than $100 each.
2. Drum Trigger unit. While not needed for everything, it can creat a kickin drum sound from the worst kit ever drug out of some kids garage. And can add a little punch to the kick drum of even the best kits. I use the Alesis D4 but I also have two drum machines that can be hooked in via MIDI to add to my arsenal of available sounds.

Vocals/Acoustic Guitar:
1. Mic preamp/Compressor/DeEsser. I use the DBX 376 and I love it. It's not an Avalon or Neve, but it works very well for the $300 I gave for it on Ebay.

Hey, I don't post much because I am such a newbie, but I wanted to tell you we have the Behringer DSP2024P Virtualizer Pro. I know it all depends on your needs, but I am just delighted with this one. I believe in Behringer anyway... but if you are shopping around for something that puts out and is cost effective, this is a kewl little unit. see this link-

I'd say all you need is a compressor (I like the Behringer Composer Pro) and a mixer (If you mount it on a rack, that it) :-) Other than that, plug-ins should do the trick just fine.

Other than a compressor that I've come to learn is a MUST, I like a mic preamp with tube warmth. It really helps to blend the vocals.Right now I'm using an ART MP Studio Pro that, for the money($40 on ebay) really works well for me.I record dry and then add effects during mixdown.

however, the nice thing about rack units us they maintain their re-sale value ...to an extent... :)

and they're impressive to look at. I think the only two effects you can't get out of a PC though are Distortion and Compression. They just don't add up to the hardware yet.

- I would add a compressor and a DI or a Line 6 POD or similars (if you record bass and/or guitar direct) at the first place.
- If you get more deep in to recording, a good preamp would be fine (but not necessary in my opinion)
- A headphones amp would be fine (not an effect but a nice rack mountable addition)

The musts are the compressor and the DI box.
