DO you have any experience with monitor in this price that you would for studio monitors ($300 range)? This is for a home studio in office that is not set up with acoustic walls or anything. Just drywall and furniture. I would like to set them up on stands at about ear height and would be within 2-3 feet of me. New or used is ok with me (Ebay).
I currently use my old home stereo speakers with are JBLs 2 way with 12" and tweeter but they are really to large to place anywere convenient and besides I hear consumer speakers are not good for monitors as they color the sound as bass etc.
Should I get active monitores bi-amped etc. Or is it ok just to use my amp to drive some decent passive ones?
Event 2020, Sampson, Beringher Truth, Alesis are some of the names that pop up on Ebay in this range and I guess are low end makers.
is there a web site that has reviews of monitors?
Appreciate any inputs!
thanks!

Nov 25, 2004 06:54 pm Of the makers you mention Event are probably the best of that bunch in that price range. And yes it is OK to use and amp to drive passive moniters. That is how the majority of studio are set up is passive moniters driven by an amp. I use KRK near field moniters with an Alesis RS300 Referance amp and love the set up. I am personally not a big fan of active moniters as they can overheat and I just dont feel they perform as well as a passive set up. But that is only my personal opinion, I know lots of peeps who prefer the active over passive for their portability.

Nov 27, 2004 09:23 pm I've a pair of tannoy reveal - passive - that I purchased for 320$. The actives were 750$ a pair, so i figured I'd get the good speakers, without the amp. I've been very happy. Very clear and detailed.
I'm using an old bookshelf type cheapo stereo for an amp to drive them.

Nov 27, 2004 09:35 pm After all the advise Ive guess I have a lot to learn. I dedided to try an inexpensive pair Nady SM250a thats a 100W powered monitor with 6.5 woofer I think. Pair is on sale for $170. Specs dont look like the flatest in the world but it has generally excellent reviews. It probably good enough for me and my home hobby stuff.
thanks again
