i'm working with a fostex vf-16 and am trying to find a solution to transport all of my tracks to pc for editing .if i install a soundcard with an optical in and out will it end my search for a solution that is inexpenive or to say less complicated than loading everything via a zip drive .any and all suggestions would be appreciated.right now i am just mixing within the vf-16 and sending via digital out to minidisc but that seems to leave me limited since nobody seems to own a minidisc

Based on what I can see about that unit, any card with an optical input would transfer the data. However, I am unsure how your unit handles exporting, you may only be able to export the full mix. Perhaps one track at a time if you Fostex allows.

But, the answer your question, Optical would be a decent digital solution for exporting, otherwise it appears youd be stuck using analog.

www.multitrackstudio.com

mackie.com/products/tracktion/index.html

And, somebody will say it, so I may as well www.ntrack.com though I had some horrible luck with it, many seems to like it.

Also, Sony is releasing more moderately priced versions of Acid, Sound Forge and Vegas shortly, or maybe already have...

well i guess you are probably right about the digital out only sending the whle mix ,i didn't really consider that.so there is an "scsi"out also, would that send the entire program intact .i got this machine used and the book i had to print from the fostex website not being to familiar with these ins and out i am hopefull to find an easy solution or scrap the whole thing and go new.oh i got a free trial of the mackie traction and liked it .for what there was to see on the disc .thanx for all suggestions

I was very impressed with Tracktion myself, I am a Sonar guy meself, but Tracktion is indeed cool, and so is MultitrackStudio.

As far as the SCSI out goes, I don't know, if you have the manual, dig in to the exporting instructions, I am sure it will tell you.

one last question and then i will disapear into my work for awhile ,the digitla output of my mixer has the option of adat or s/pdif is s/pdif what i would use to send the individual tracks to my pc or to use the the pc as a slave to the recorder . in your opinion .i can't seem to get a straight answer out of these instructions as they are poorly printed or don't make any sense and fostex support really does blow!

ADAT, in theory, can send several tracks individually (8 I believe) so that would be better if you have a device that can use ADAT in your PC, S/PDIF is stereo (sometimes surround as well) so I would say ADAT if you can.

Don't get an Audigy, look for a real sound card with lightpipe from M-Audio or ESI.
