Hi Folks,
I'm brand new to this area, I have purchased a Layla 20 unit, I have heard that my AMD system will probably not be compatible with it :(
well anywayI'll have to get a new MB with intel chipset + P4 CPU + mem to fix that part...no biggie

My main question is if get a eight mic preamp device eight mics in and that is cabled out into to the layla 20 's eight inputs can I just go out of the host connector to the Layla PCI card and record and add effects etc. when mixing..mastering instead using the 10 outputs?

any help would be helpful...it's all acoustic istruments, banjo, guitar, mandolin, dobro and acoustic upright bass

TIA

In a word: yes.

I'm having a hard time finding much info about that card in particular, it seems to be a discontinued model from Echo/Event.

From what I can tell, you should be able to do as you say and run preamp outputs into the Layla inputs and record in whichever recording software you choose to use. It looks like it originally came with a special edition of Cool Edit Pro, but since this card is pretty old, I'm guessing that you got it second-hand and may not have Cool Edit. Whatever software you use, you should be able to mix/master/add effects there.

I believe that the outs on a sound card interface are usually provided for routing back to a mixer or some sort of monitoring setup...you're not required to use them (at least that's the way it is with my M-Audio Delta card). The signal should rout from the interface's inputs->your computer->interface's outputs.

Good luck!

Thanks Tadpui for your reply, i will go out of the layla pci card outputs to my crown amp and to the JBL speaker for monitoring and playback purposes.

Hey, Mondoman! I'm a big bluegrass fan myself. Welcome to HRC...can't wait to hear some of the stuff that you record!

Thanks Jim,
I will be on a learning curve, i thought Bass players only had to count to four...lol
I will need lots of help....this is all new to me I know what it's supposed to sound like but I have to learn to obtain that sound. been missing out on lots of cd purchase requests and having no demo cd is not helping either. I will put wma or mp3 samples on our web site asap

Thanks,
Don

I'm not familiar with your card (heard of it but don't know anything about it), but it seems strange that it would be incompatible with an AMD processor. I'm assuming it's a PCI card. I'm no expert, but it just doesn't seem logical to me.

Yes, the Gina and Layla 20 have issues with non-Intel chipsets. I have a Gina 20 laying in a box here at my house.

Thanks Dbmaster,
Is it fruitless to try and resolve the issue or should i just a P4 and intel chip based MB?...unfortunately i had not read your post until post purchase

Thanks,

Well, I will tell you it's worth a try, cuz it MIGHT work. However, even if it does work, Echo will be of no support since it shouldn't. I had serious problems myself, it worked well for a long time with an ALI chipset, then I switched to VIA and it locked up my system all the time, and was a huge friggin nightmare.

Personally, I would have stuck with the AMD ond gotten a different sound card, but, since you have the soundcard, I would try your existing one, if it works, great, if not, prepare to buy.

The problem of non-Intels is well documented by Echo and is not an issue that simple driver upgrades fix, it's a core problem with the Motorola chip on the card.

Thanks dB Master,
I am a pilgrim, I am an AMD CPU man, my MSI 6380 has SIS chipset, I will cross my fingers and give it a go. If you read my initial post do you think that cabling setup will work assuming that the Layla 30 does work and my output from my SBlive card to my crown amp work for monitoring and playback?

Thanks again,
Don

If I am understanding what you are saying, yeah, that sound right.
