Lack of MIDI

I recently went to play back an old MIDI composition and realized the M-Audio Firewire 410 I've been using as an external soundcard has no MIDI output built in.

First, am I just a dolt who doesn't have the Firewire's MIDI output set up properly?

Second, if it doesn't have a built in MIDI synth, what are my (low-cost) options for adding one that won't conflict with the M-Audio and would ideally play-back through the M-Audio (I run all PC sound through my studio monitors which are run out of the Firewire)?

All help, as always, is very much appreciated. =)

I would suppose the easiest way would be to add a good ol' SOundDisaster and use it for just the MIDI synth.

SoundDisaster? O_o Is that implying the use of obviously inferior Creative products? I actually have an Audigy 2 ZS, but the software for it caused all manner of ungodly frumps and flops when I first got the Firewire 410.

HRC and it's staff does not condone such activity, however, given the situation that you are kind of in a pinch, you may have to just make do.

If you had problems at first, maybe go check for driver updates for both devices and see it newer drivers are available and what issues they address.

I use an older soundblaster Live card with my delta 66 with zero problems. However, with firewire and newer drivers from the audiogy, your situation is obviously not the same as mine, but it can probably be done.

Yeah I run a stock soundcard that is much like a sound blaster right next to my delta for midi purposes, and it works fine. You can probably find a soundblaster live for around 20 bucks if you look hard enough

As of the moment, MIDI playback capabilities come from my cruddy Yamaha keyboard - which has been my main keyboard for writing and whatnot for the better part of five years. I suppose the only downside (apart from needing to specifically tell each track in Cubase that it is to play back through the keyboard) is that the speakers periodically pop. My guess is that it's damage caused by max volume play during jams. I'm not sure if that's a setup that's useful or advised. At this point, I'm reluctant to take up a PCI slot with a sub-par card unless I were to say pick up a PCI recording interface that gave me more pre-amped mic ins.

I think I'm making things complicated. ^_^;;

Well if all you need is an actual midi I/O then there are a few good ones out there cheap that are USB. I believe M-Audio as a decent 1 in 1 out for pretty cheap, and that iwll get you hooked back up to your Yamaha for sure.

I've got MIDI connectivity, I'm just lacking in internal playback capability. I'm honestly just a little weirded out to learn that the Firewire 410 doesn't have that built in, but it's also not a proper sound-card.

Nope it isnt, but it is a good one for the firewire varity. I would look at maybe getting the Roland Virtual Sound Canvas. It is a software virtual general midi synth, and it will do extended GM as well. Otherwise, there are several low dollar hardware synth units out there that do GM as well. From Roland, Edirol, and a few others.

Many thanks to all for the assistance. I'll see what I can slap together. =)
