console inserts

I've got,I think,a stupid question.I've got a Tascam M2600 board and I'm trying to connect the inserts to a patchbay with Y-cables.My question is:should the patchbay be normalled or de-normalled.I've got a brain cramp and have confused myself trying to figure out the answer.Would appreciate any input on my dilemma.
Thanks

First, make sure the Y cable's are tip/ring/sleeve. Or you sill be having some big problem's. And normalled is the preffered method to use going through a patch bay from insert point's on a mixer. This allow's the signal to go through and back to the mixer when you are not patching in an effect or processor. Because when you plug a TRS cable into the insert connection on the mixer it now breaks the loop in the channel strip and need's to have the loop completed somewhere else, ie: teh patch bay.

And in the normalled configuration on the patch bay, you can either tap only the output side for a direct signal to anywhere, or insert a second signal into the channel of audio.

Good point Noize, but, isn't your opinion assuming that the normalled config is heading back to the console? Maybe the normalled config is routed to something besides that...

Or, maybe what I am thinking in my head is not coming out in words right...

Very good point none the less...

Probably a little late to reply to this one, but AP audio makes a nice inexpensive little patch bay with reversable modules for each patch that can be purchased seperately. They are very easy to modify. I modified the modules so that I can feed a TRS cable (snake) from the inserts into the back of the patchbay and do the tip ring swap on the module. Then I use standard TRS patch cables to the input and output of the gear I want to insert. It eliminates the need for a "Y" cable.

OOOOOH, Walt, you goota go get a Behringer bay. they are switchable right on the top. No pulling anything out at all. No re-wiring, nothing.

And dB, going normalled let's him have the option of having nothing inserted and it route's back to the console, or using it the upper jack's as a direct out only, or the lower jack's as direct in's only, or the proverbial insert for effect's and so on.

Oh there's that word again!...Say it with me....Bear Ring ger.... I will give it a shot!

By the way. Went to visit my daughters last week and while down in Kansas...click click...I stumbled on the musicians friend return warehouse. Tons of stuff returned for one reason or another on sale. They had two Behringer MX9000 boards that looked brand new for a grand each. Tons of audio cards, software, misc rack stuff etc. Some real good prices and some not marked down that much. So if you're ever in the land of OZ look it up!

Bridged...?

Common ground?

Normalizing a patch bay is sending the output to the input without a cable.
