Suggestions on recorder

Hi all, well im out on the market looking to step up from my Fostex MR-8 and get something that lets me have more options. Hopefully you can help me out.

What I am looking for:

1) track EQ-ing, after the track has been laid
down.

2) Mastering on the machine, like a boost button, like the MR-8 has.

3) USB, so I can send it to my computer fix up the tracks a little, then burn it on a cd.

4) Track bouncing (5/6, 7/8)

Those are the 4 major things that I need, Phantom power, and more than 2 inputs would be good also.

I was looking at the Portastudio and read up about it a little and it said nothing about mastering or usb, I am looking for something in that price range.

Thanks in advanced

why not go the route of recording on the computer? That would give you everything that you said you needed, an independant eq for each channel, as well as a master eq, and with software you can master on the computer (though it is a bit pricey) wouldn't have to send audio to the computer via USB since it's already there, but it would have the ports to use USB devices, and unlimited track bouncing.

Fostex VF-160 (I have the older VF-16) will import/export wav files from CD for easy movement to and from computer. EQ is OK, except when you get down into the bass regions...it sort of drops off around 400 Hz. It doesn't do much in terms of mastering, but I usually export to PC and use Cool Edit to do my mastering (not that I really know what I'm doing!)

As far as ease of use, if I can figure it out, anybody can figure it out. The Cutaways (my band) recorded our CD on it. You can hear some low-fi snippets at www.thecutaways.us if you're interested.

Hope the fingers are getting better jim.

I think I'm turning on Monday night football tonight, how about you? I hope the Pack turns things around and pull out a good game tonight.

Thanks, dB. The hand is slowly on the mend! I'm hoping that it's a good game tonight. Our defense is so incredibly atrocious, that Brett will have to throw five touchdown passes just to keep us in the game!

Boy, the Vikes nearly dropped an ugly one yesterday. I was glad to see them pull it out, but they didn't need to make it so close!

Oh, ya mean like Daunte has twice this season so far :-)

sorry, saw the jab, HAD to take it.

I'm cheering for GB tonight, though, always do unless they are playing the Vikings.

Yeah, the Vikings defense is better this year, but it would be hard NOT to be better considering how horrible they have been. The Vikings D just collapses toward the end of games, Ithey must need better conditioning or something.

It's a good thing the Vikes have the number one offense, cuz they need to be good to win games cuz the D gives up so many points...

It did make for an exciting game though.

Guitar Jim,

Band is nice, I like the cover of Brown Eye Girl.

I dont use any programs to edit tracks on the computer, should I look into that? If so, how do you throw them to the comuter, you dont master each track? You just take the unmastered guitar track (For example) then throw it on the program then get the drums and everything else on seperate tracks and master it on the computer?

Ditto for dB's suggestion. A friend dropped by with that Yamaha-ha-ha last week. (sorry leftovers from being a biker) and it is a very nice piece of gear from what I can tell. Havn't done a lot with it just yet, but it seems to all be there.

Well I have decided on the yamaha aw 16, going to take a little while to learn how to work it good but it'l be fine. I am going to be mixing down on the machine by itself, no computers.

I am gong to spend about 150 - 200$ on monitors, and about 100$ on a mic preamp.

I was thinking about some fostex monitors that I saw at sam ash. Maybe i'll put up the extra $$$$ and go with samson resolve ones.

The preamp I am going to get might be a Behringer or the ART one in the gear bag section.

Any suggestions on what would be best bang for the buck with the money im looking to spend?

One additional question , How do you connect the yamaha 16 track to the computer? Do I need a soundcard for it?

I got to play with my friends a little. He dropped it by as he could not figgure it out. It really is a nice unit for an 8 track all in one unit. Very nice sound quality, very compact. The manual simply SUCKS! That is the only down side. They must have hired a technical writer right out of U of McDropings.

You don't really hook it to a computer, exactly. You can burn all of the tracks recorded to the cd and use a cd to transfer the files. Either that or you can get a soundcard with lightpipe capabilities and "play" the files back and forth real time. Last option is to use the monitor out connections to again "play" the information back and forth.

Nice choice! I am impressed with the unit. Just not with the bound toilet paper included.
