It's not worth the trouble to keep all these different partitions for different tasks. Some people say they keep their studio PC off the internet, and that fine, but there is little benefit to it. Also, partitioning a hard drive can also cause performance losses.

My studio PC is on my network which is connected to the internet 24/7. I have had no problems from doing it at all. As long as you manage your machine properly, there is no need to go to this measure. Being on the internet does not interfere with anything, the viruses and spyware that people are so paranoid about are what makes the problems. Proper PC maintenece will keep your system clean as well.

If you run a decent anti-virus app (I recommend AVG, it's free at www.grisoft.com and it's good) you won't have problems...or you lessen your chance considerably.

What is with everybody getting so incredibly paranoid lately. Heck I have considered not even running anti-virus apps on my studio box anymore cuz viruses today are so easy to innoculate anyway with all the tools out there it doesn't even matter anyway. Virus' can happen, sure, and they can suck, but they are typically very easy to get rid of, and they are even easier to prevent. Besides, partitioning won't stop a virus, if both partitions are on the same physical drive, if your internet partitions gets it...well, the drive has it. The only way to stop it is to have two spearate PC's completely not hooked together, but then, if you audio PC is never online, how do you update the OS?

99% of virus' are not malicous, they are just annoying. And I will promise that singing up ofr ANYTHING from AOL won't help, it will just get your name, phone number and email address on a bunch of lists you would rather not have it on.

Don't worry yourself like that, and don't take something that is really simple and overcomplicate it. It helps nothing...seriously.

I'm running partitions on my system but not to avoid the internet..
dB is right. Just keep good AV software and keep it up to date.. I've had viruses before and like he said, they are mainly just an annoyance.. I've never had one just kill my system. But yeah I keep my recording partition online as it's way easier to look up info when you need to rather than reboot to your other partition.
But from what I've read on just about every 'home studio' site; and even Protools suggests that you do keep your DAW system as 'program-free' as possible.. Thats why I use different partitions.. One install of XP for my every day use with all my entertainment software (games, mp3's, porn, etc..) and a seperate install of XP just for Protools and music related software.. On this partition, I've uninstalled or disabled any unnecisary windows apps and try to keeps things as non-cpu intensive as possible to lighten up the load for protools.
I also keep all of my recording files on a seperate drive which seems to be the rule of thumb wherever you ask..
I'm a noob to this whole deal, but I just thought I'd pass what I've learned along.

"I am not even a real person, just an internet bot with artificial intelligence."

That radically alters my memory of being in minneappolis then... :) ...but the army said I was just doing paperwork and staying in really nice hotel...

Back on topic... I've been running without Virus protection for a few weeks on my computer... It was mishandeling deleted files so I formatted everything... I'll probably put AVG back on later
