Well I turned in my final term paper today for my Associates Degree...
It was supposed to be 18-20 pages on a historical topic of my choosing... I eeked 17 pages out of a critical analysis of The Life of St. Gildas... whos primary fame is for not mentionaing King Arthur in his "history" ...which isn't really a history at all but a complaint of the sudden collapse of civilization, ie Rome. Of course "The Life of" attempts to make ammends 500 years after the fact in the 12th Century and takes potshots at the aristocracy and papacy while doing so... so even in this, Arthur turns into a sort of villian embodying everything Gildas complained about... and is given as the reason for there being no record... as Gildas throws all the records into a lake.
The entire written arthurian legacy of course is a mess with monks blatantly lieing trying to one up the next monastery... The author of Life of St. Gildas even managed to confuse his own country with France (then Gaul) Gaulia, Gailua, Gwailia, Gallia... now which one was Wales and which one was Gaul?... I know!! I'll choose one that doesn't make any sense and then use vague terms...like Bishop of the Roman Church instead of Bishop soandso or Pope soandso!! *sigh*
I'm glad it's over :)
