i dont really wanna lug my computer around to live gigs. i'd rather just have my mixer and rack gear. so i was hoping someone could point me toward a cheap recording device i could simply send my rca tape out into and record a concert.

If you're just wanting to hear what you sound like and/or create a decent demo to hand to people, then a good old-fashioned cassette deck will work pretty well. I have recorded our shows that way in the past, and only the trained ear (not me!) could tell the difference from DAT. Some people I know use a minidisc recorder, but I think those are a bit more pricey.

I plan on doing this. I have a minidisc which I'll just have a line in from the mixing desk so I know roughly how my live sound comes over...

Mini discs are far cheaper these days due to MP3's etc. Ebay...the answer to many of lifes problems...Beer..the answer to the rest!

I'm with guitar jim insofar as using a cassette deck, with proper preparation you can get a decent sound, though not release-quality, it can be a decent boot-leg quality.

Even better yet, get something like a rackmount 4 track or 8 track deck and you can get a much better result by being able to mix it down later from 4 or 8 track source. Tascam has 8-track deck that one can pick up quite cheap these days. 238 syncassettes go cheap, and I had one for a few years they bleed very little from track to track and they sound quite nice can record at normal or double speed...very cool units for this type of purpose. Here is more info about it www.stack.nl/~erwint/multi/tascam.html

Hey DB..that sounds quite cool.

As I am just one dude singing/playing on my tod, how do you think the mini disc route would work, bearing in mind that the signal will mixed at the desk so I'll essentially be recording the out front mix??

Coco-I use a portable Mini disc player to record my live shows. Quite simply, there is nothing better. I would feel comfortable releasing a CD with the quality of those recordings.

Nice one Karyn...I dont plan on releasing these live shows but I do plan on replaying em and seeing how it come over.

It would be cool to maybe see where the live v studio songs differed and maybe try to emulate one or the other for the next gig/ep...

Cheers...

I agree with dB in using a multitracker. I'd recommend a cassete format too for durability reasons. But if you want something digital, check out the Roland VSR-880. It's a 2 space rack mountable 8 track digital recorder with a built in digital mixer so you don't need a mixer to mixdown to 2 track. They listed for $1800, but when they got discontinued a couple of years ago the price dropped dramatically to $499 out the door. You can pick one up on Ebay for around $250 these days. I use 3 of them in my home studio and they kick *** IMO.
