Laptop soundcard improves audio performance?

First, I love your site, I just happened upon it the other day and I've been reading in my free time almost constantly since.

I'm considering buying the Echo i/o for my laptop. I was wondering if this, in addition to giving me a quality audio input for acid or other music editing software, would improve my computer's performance when playing many sounds at the same time as in sample playback or maybe while using softsynth. I'm kind of in over my head with this question because i have no hands on experience with soft synth but would like to learn how to incorporate it into my music. I would use the indigo i/o's output for headphones, the input for vocals guitar or whatever i decide to mic and then I figure I would get something like the M-Audio oxygen8 keyboard that has a usb interface for programming midi or the soft synth. Does this sound like a good setup for a person who has a laptop? I might also get a small mixer/preamp for any trickey vocal or acoustic situation. does the oxygen8 suck? do i want a fancier one?

All advice welcome, hell just direct me to some good posts if there are some.

My profile has a lots of specifics on my system etc.

Hello, and welcome to HRC.

Well, getting a sound card like the Echo I/O (there are many others as well) will improve most anything to do with audio on your OC except for system sounds and games. Gaming sound cards have certain "environmental models", for lack of a better term, which pro and semi-pro sound cards don't waste time with. Regarding playing your synths, softsynths, samplers and things like that, yes, it will help. It will especially help while playing back some and recording some at the same time (full-duplex use).

I have not used the Oxygen8, but I own the Radium49 and love it. Quick and simple MIDI via USB, I love it.

Other I/O's to look at are here www.homerecordingconnecti...t&cat_id=22 there are many besides Echo, tho Echo does make great stuff.

Thanks for the quick responses.

As for the many other choices I have for sound cards with a laptop, should I expect better performance (latency, etc.) going the pcmcia route or going with usb? And what other full duplex options do I have?

Of the products you linked me to, the only cardbus option is by echo (the layla--though of course the indigo i/o is another option from them). I am wondering if for a laptop a cardbus connection is preferrable and if any other manufacturer makes something along the lines of the indigo i/o.

any advice or discussion on the issue is welcome. Do a lot of the HRC members record with laptops?
