tascam 788 help needed

I'm just starting out with a 788 and there are two essential things I can't figure out how to do, I've been through the manual multiple times.

1. I do the pre-mastering like the manual says and it seems to work fine. When I go to check the mastering before putting it onto a CD it shows the track name and plays it but I can't hear anything through headphones. It's also silent on the CD. Do I need to adjust something during pre-mastering?

2. I can't figure out how to move tracks over so I can record more overtop. I've followed the manual to send the recorded stuff to the sub mixer then to the stereo channel (and the assignment map confirms that they were moved) but when I record more on tracks 1-6 it goes overtop of whatever I had there before.

Any help that anyone can give me would be greatly appreciated, I emailed Tascam but they haven't responded in over a week and I need to get this figured out. If I haven't been clear enough let me know and I'll explain further. Thanks.

actually the pre-mastering comes when everything is recorded for the song, so i'm guessing getting the second point taken care of first would work best. again, any help anyone can give would be great.
