i look through these recording magazines, and these things like gigasampler and kontakt dont make that much sense to me. i thought a sampler was just a machine or piece of software that would let you record a sample of something and then tweak it and prepare it for use in a multitrack environment. i guess. although that doesnt seem like it would justify its own existence. i guess i dont really know what they are. they are also triggerable by midi or something? is that the main definition? why are they called samplers? what else do they do and what makes something a sampler? and do i need one?

A sampler basicly record and play back a sound sample. The more advanced ones are triggerable by midi, tweakable, programmable, and allow for the storing and playing back of multiple samples. but yes, basicly they record and playback sound samples.
