Cheap, Good Mastering Programs

Is there such a thing? I really don't want to spend $300 on a mastering program when I just spent the same amount on a recording program like Sonar. All I need is a volume maximizer, final compression, and saturation, etc. There doesn't really seem to be many options out there, which is a shame when It's such an important part of the process of recording. Everything these days is MIDI, MIDI, MIDI... and more MIDI. What about audio? That's what people really want :-)

Look through the freeware section of our links directory, there is probably a few in there...but surely not the powerhouse apps like WaveLab or Sound Forge. SOund forge makes a lighter version that used to be called Sound Forge XP (I think it's called Sound Forge Studio now) you can get for $50-$100 or so I think.

For $150 you can get a GREAT deal on some multitracking AND mastering software, check the top thread in the "Talkin' Smack" forum, it's a limited time offer from Musician's Friend! And it's a GREAT deal on SOund Forge Studio AND Acid Pro 4, which is a very nice multitracking app...both apps plus some other stuff for $150!!!

Thanks for the info.
Should mastering be applied before or after export of a sound file to wav. format? It's best if it's applied after so that you don't lose volume on export, right?

mastering is best done after exportation. Record your song, do what you will to it in your recording app, then export it as a .WAV file, open the WAV file in your mastering app and do all your mastering there, then load the mastered WAV into your burner software and burn away. That's the basics of it. :)
