Windows Multimedia Recording feature disabled!!!! please help

I´m working some tracks at a friends house, and one day he tells me that suddenly he can´t record anymore. When I see the sound properties, with 'playback' being in the upper half of the window and 'recording' in the lower (you know what I´m talking about, this is basic stuff), the recording area is all grayed out, totally disabled, and can´t be accessed. Of course no recording can be made.
I think the soundcard is a SB 16 PnP.
What has happened?
What can be done?
Maybe reinstalling the soundcard?
What do you think?
Please answer! Any halp will be appreciated.
