Need help in deciding about a keyboard MIDI controller...

Hey, guys. I've been doing some research on the 'Net, and I think I'm more confused than when I started. I have a few of questions; maybe one or more of you could help me. Please bear with me, as I have virtually no experience with MIDI, or keyboard controllers.

I read somewhere that a keyboard controller is monophonic only. Does that mean no chords???? What's up with that? (I couldn't see first hand at my local GuiTerrible Center, as all their controllers were either not hooked up, or hooked up to stuff that wasn't working.)

I was looking at a Midiman Keystation 61, but have read a number of reviews stating that the velocity sensors in well-used keys quit working in a fairly short period of time. Anybody use one, or know someone who does?

In the future, I'm planning on getting an M-Audio 2496, which you all know has MIDI in and out. But for right now, I'm looking in 2 directions. One is the Roland PC-300 ($200 on Musiciansfriend), which plugs directly into the USB port.

Or, I'm thinking about getting this Miditech controller ($100 local store), and using it through a Midiman Midisport 2X2 USB. Which way is the way to go?

Finally, what do people here use? What do you recommend? (Keeping in mind I want to stay at $200 or below.)

In any event, if a controller is only monophonic, then ít's a moot point, as I'll continue to program chords in my good ol' piano roll...

A controller cannot be mono-phonic, as it does not play sound's at all. It only sends midi note on and off, and other midi message's. That mean's it is only sending data not audio.

The Roland is a nice unit for the price. I use a Fatar StudioLogic SL-1100, but it is one of the top end controller's ($2800.00) so I wouldn't recomend it for simple programing. MidiMan has several controller's out there, the Keystation being one of the lower end unit's. You will want to have velocity sensative key's for sure though. And I would recomend staying away from the MidiTech stuff. It is cheap and that mean's cheap as in built cheap. I guess for starters I would go with the Roland unit. But MidiMan is building some really good stuff, so I would just find a store to try them at.

The Oxygen 8 from M-Audio looks good too, though I've not used one, I've been looking into getting one though
