my new machine has got 2 hard drives, c and d . c has all the windows os and stuff on, installed programmes, etc etc etc.
d is pretty bare, but has a few windows-looking files on there i dont know what to do with...can i move em, or should i just leave em or what? if i move em, where to?
heres how it looks now...

you can format D I can't see any special folders or files on there

Jun 06, 2004 01:03 pm what about the windows one? how can i tell which is in use? like, what if some of the files are actually in use by xp now?

Jun 06, 2004 01:07 pm actually, the windows file on the c drive only contains a fonts file, a temp file and a start menu file. theres loads of crap in the one on the d drive.
maybe i best leave this as it is...
Jun 06, 2004 01:25 pm Weird, go in to WIndows COntrol Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Storage > Disk Management and look to see which drive is set "active" that would be your primary system drive...and presumably where all the system files are. Sometimes the D: drive can be set up as primary drive for weird reasons I won't get in to.
Rather than format, perhaps disconnect the D: drive and try to boot up, then disconnect C: and try to boot up...see which one works and format the other :-)

Jun 06, 2004 01:56 pm spot on db, d is set to active, and c says system...
Jun 06, 2004 02:48 pm thats weirder yet, if d: is active, then it should be system...which drive has the "windows" directory with dozens of subdirectoreis under it?

Jun 07, 2004 03:26 am If they are partitions then I do not think that you get much increased speed from using a different drive. At least that was my experience.

Jun 29, 2004 05:42 pm Assuming you have 2 physical drives, I'd just back up everything you want to keep onto the larger of the 2 drives, unplug the larger drive, and format / install windows on the smaller one. Then, after you get windows installed, plug-in the larger drive and delete all "windowsy" stuff on it, as it is obviously no longer needed! (This is all assuming you have the install disks for windows and all of the software you're running AND assuming that you back-up your email if you're using outlook or eudora or some non-web-based email service.)
