A friend of mine is selling his Behringer MDX2600 Pro-XL Compressor and I was wondering if it was worth getting. I need a compressor of some sort so I was just wondering if anyone here has one or has used one before. I don't want to spend the money on it unless it will really make a difference in my recording sound...particularly drums and bass.

I've got a couple of Behringer compressers and they are fine units. As to how big of a difference it will make on bass and drums that depends on what you are trying to achieve. They both have fully adjustable threashold, ratio, attack and release which is pretty much the defination of a compresser. They also function as expanders, limiters and gates, although the gating functions on mine are limited to some extent.

I use Behringer compressor's as well and have for a long time. Very sturdy and reliable unit.

As for the making your sound better, that would be yes and no. Yes it will help you get better results, but it will not make bad sounding equipment sound better. If you have a good kick to start, it will make it have more punch or attack, A good bass to start with and it will give the bass more presance and punch as well.

So yes, it is a good investment. But be aware compression is very subtle and can easily be over done.
