Stupid Fishing Song

This song is why, when I played in bands, they wouldn't let me write songs. This has to be the stupidest song I've ever spent time on. Or at least it's on the shortlist.
Everything in this song is true, right down to the last line in the last chorus that identifies the exact spot that we used to fish.
This one is really rough and I'm not satified with the total sound, the bass line or the guitars but I'm tired of working on it. I put this tune together just for the laughs and for my friends back in Ohio who occasionaly still fish at this spot.
it's called MosquitoCreek

Goes something like this...

I been out fishin in the deep blue sea
Fished the rivers & lakes and the clear mountain streams
Fished with nets in Florida, crank bait in Tennesee
Caught some lunkers up in Canada and Walleye outta Erie
But if you like catfishin and ya wanna do it right
We'll fish along Mosquito Creek around midnight

Swattin mosquitos down by the old fishin hole
Got me a catfish dancin on the end of my pole

They built a new bridge, dug a hole in the creek
It was swampy & thick but the fishin was sweet
Put some gizzards in a jar & leave em bout a week
Ya need some stink bait when ya fish down at the creek

Swattin mosquitos down by the old fishin hole
Got me a catfish dancin on the end of my pole

Ya gotta get there right around dark, and hike thru the brush from where ya gotta park
Lug some coolers full of beer & start a fire in the rocks
Find a place for your chair & put some tunes on the box
Put the gizzards in a sock & throw em in upstream
Let the current take that rotten smell from here to New Orlean (s)
This aint no fishin story, I swear on my aunt Mabel
To catfish rotten gizzards smell like dinner on the table

Swattin mosquitos down by the old fishin hole
Got me a catfish dancin on the end of my pole
Swattin mosquitos down by the old fishin hole
Skeeders are bitin but I cant let go of my pole

Put a crawler on your hook & set a tight line
Sit back, crack a beer and have a good time
It starts as a nibble and turns into a bite
Ya give a good yank and ya really gotta fight
He's twistin and turnin & ya haven't got much time
Cause he's runnin downstream & he's sure to bust your line
So you keep the pressure on him, reel him in when he slows
Put the big ones on the stringer
Let the little ones go

Swattin mosquitos down by the old fishin hole
Got me a catfish dancin on the end of my pole
Swattin mosquitos down by the old fishin hole
Mosquito Creek, route 5 , Ohio

see told ya it was stupid, but the words were a labor of love. We had some hi times under that bridge.

I'm downloading now and will check it out. Crash, I love the lyrics. Why is this stupid? This might be a song about a simple, unhurried pastime you enjoy, but man, I'm a fellow fisherman, and reading those lyrics brings back a lot of good memories for me. The imagery in the lyrics really speaks to me.

Ok, I just heard it.... not stupid at all, Crash. :) I dig it. The chorus is just great, man.

On a thread a few months ago someone couldn't think of anything to write a song about. I guess this song proves that you can write about anything if you feel strongly enough about it. I haven't been very productive musically the last few months, but with every tune I work on, I learn a little more. I found the rythem guitar sound after playing with it for a long time. That and the multiple voices in the chorus were enough to make this tune a success in my eyes/ears. Thx for the listen guys.

You can also write a song about nothing... :-)

I don't know why you think this is stupid, the lyrics work very well. They show you put some real thought into this.

I just wish I could hear it on this work PC. There isn't a DL somewhere, is there?

Thanks Tony, got it.

I like the song crash. At first the groove thing didn't sit with me much, but by half way through the song, it started getting catchy, by the end I was drawn right into it.

Good show.

Cmon now. This is why when you played in a band your band was stupid. I don't care what anyone says, that song is SICK. The lyrics are a little campy here and there, but that's what gives the song its charm. The vocal delivery is like country rap. I like it. The guitar solo is very nice (funky bluesy, great tone -gotta love it), and I really like the chorus, alot. Yeah, way to go with this one.

yeah, what kinda band was your band anyway? this song is original and quirky. i'd say capitalize on the campiness. you've got a hit single in the making!

I was thinking the same thing, whatever bandmates shot down this song don't know squat.

I also agree on the country rap, i was thinking kid rock at first.

ditto. there are times when nobody shares the vision you have of your own work, and you get discouraged... not everybody likes every song. But this particular song? I like this one, I don't see the problem. oh well.

Well, i read the lyrics before I listened (really liked em), and i was expecting more of a Doobie Brothers type sound to it, so it took me by suprise at first, but by the end, i was hooked like a big ole' catfish.
Just Renewed my fishing liscence last week, too :)

Really a Feel-Good kinda song, suits the season and i cant get enough of it

Hahaha, thanks guys...
Coolo... yep I played with some sick puppies back in the day. I would write songs like this (not this particular song) and they would shoot them down but I wasn't offended because their songs, to me, were worse. So we would compromise and write together. Only about 1/3 of the 4-5 hours of music we played were originals but people didn't come to hear us play our stuff, we were the typical bar/dance/jam band and we knew it. What kept that band going for the 5 yrs we were together was the freedom to imporvise. Take a solo and play for as long as you want, we'll get into a groove and wait for your signal.

You guys hit the nail on the head, I set out to write a southern rock kinda rap song. Since I'm not a rapper I just did it the way it felt best to me. And yes it's all tongue-in-cheek but I swear it's all true.

Tone...Ive been having trouble getting the distortion out of my guitar sound. Might be my equipment, might be my guitar might be the way I'm recording . Its a real problem that I'm working on and the guitars in this song are a perfect example.

TonyD ran this song thru his Magic Button and cleaned it up a lot, the new version is posted.

Now for the important stuff for all you fishermen. Going to California in a few weeks to lounge on the beach. We dig up a sandcrab about the size of a quarter right at the waters edge. Put that sucker on a hook and put a 3 oz. weight on the end of the line, throw it out behind where the waves are breaking and catch sharks, sandsharks, perch and my favorite, very edible corbina, yum, cant wait.

Crash, when I said SICK, I meant it in a good way, like really cool. Me and my group are the same way, when we actually take the time to write stuff with each other. We're always shooting down what everyone else says.

Even though you're not a rapper, it came out cool, and I think it's because 1) you have a sense of rhythm, and 2) you didn't come off like you were trying too hard. You said you didn't like the tone, but I really liked it. I'm gonna go listen to the new one now.

ok, listened to it, and yeah, nice job TonyD. It definitely sounds more polished. Sweet.

Coolo....I knew exactly what you meant and thanks. Working with other musicians is tough at times but very rewarding if you can even out all the egos. I found it was a very political thing.
