Song: Don't Need Someone to Tell Me

This is my latest stuff. Kind-of spoken/rap-like, but not rap by normal definition (I think). I'm not all too excited about the mix and I might do some retakes on the vocals. Some of the vocals were chopped up and used as percussive sounds and some were used as samples on my synth as pads and sweeps. Sure would appreciate your comments on any aspect of this, including the song itself. No offense will be taken, shred away.

I'm thinking the vocals could be more out front and the bass and drums (especially the snare) need to be brought out more. Do you think I should put some lead guitar fills on it?

Hey thanks Tony. Glad you enjoyed it. Since it has kind-of youth-oriented pop/angst lyrics, we're calling it angsta-rap.

P.S. Yes, I know I mentioned "angsta-rap" here once before. No, I'm not so old that I'm forgetting what I said. Yes, I'm milking it.

Very interesting stuff. I've definitely never heard anything quite like it. It has a sinister kind of tone to it.

I'd definitely like to hear the vocals stand out more thru some EQ. I don't think that any lead guitar fills would be necessary. This is so unconventional that it stands on its own very well as-is. I think that the minute-long fade-out is a bit too drawn out, but I think that the length of the song is perfect.

Hey thanks for the thoughts, Tadpui. Yeah, the fade was just messing around. I think I'll EQ the vocals and maybe bring our the bass guitar a little more. I really appreciate the comments and suggestions. Cool...

Cool stuff. I dont know much about eq-ing etc but I would like to here the bass more in something like this. But I am listening on cheap headphones at work so maybe I cant hear it bceause of that.

What would you think of having a sampled sax in there playing something high and eerie? Maybe even a bit atonal. Especially during the break between lyrics over the main riff. Or bring out a bit more those swoopy phaser sounding things in the background.

Hey Mauz, yeah I might try something in there. I would like to fill that out a little more, I think it sounds a bit empty. Gonna try another mix this week. Thanks!

CompSem, that was truly cool! I like that one a lot. Very original. However - I didn't hear any vocals at all. I completely missed them. Keep in mind, I'm almost always hearing HRC stuff through my pc speaker here at work, so that probably has a lot to do with it. But the music itself was great - very progressive, driving sound, interesting layered instruments, I dig this one. Very cool, man.

Very cool song CompSem. Mix wise the vocals and drums are buried listening on my system, bass is okay in the mix. I don't think it really needs a lead guitar in it, though it couldn't hurt to try it. :) The use of effects are well placed IMO, and I really like the overall energy of the song.

Thanks Dan. I think I'm the "mixed up" in my style! I'll have to check out Joydrop, I'm not familiar with their music.
