New Song - Any Input or Critique Most Welcome....

Hi Guys

I posted a song a fair old while back, for which many of you guys gave me lots of good feedback and great suggestions to improve this.

I've since re-recorded the whole track, dropping some guitar parts and replacing some with a far better piano track, REAL bass (I had used MIDI originally) and a brand new drum track & vocal track.

A good few differences..anyway. The link is here:

www.soundclick.com/bands/6/deadflowersmusic.htm

The song is "Apart From You (2004 Remix". Although its not a remix, its a whole new version, I called it that so it would be easy to identify.

If anyone fancies giving me some input/critique I'd be very greatful. What would be even better would be comparisons between my new version and the old version (both on the same page).

** If possible, listen Hi-Fi as Lo-Fi just aint that good **

Thanks guys...

Coco.

Good stuff, its a little tough to pick up the words though. The sound is great. great job on the drums, and over all its really nice. I kept waiting for it to "go nuts" the lead was a little hot and out front in the mix for my taste, but thats nit-picky. thumbs up here!

Great piano tone you've got there man. The drums and bass sound good, too.

I agree with Tony that the lead tone is a bit over the top in the context of this song. You could probably obtain that same sensitivity and sustain with much less distortion and some compression in your pre-amplifier stage.

Also, it sounds like the piano starts dragging behind the drums part-way through.

Aside from those nit-picky things, you've obviously put some hard work into this and it definitely shows.

Thanks for taking the time Tadpui.

I agree with this comment on the lead gtr (only guitar in fact!) and I've now lowered this within the mix.

I may also have a look at the amp setting for this and see if I can cut some of that gain a bit as you say.

Piano & Drums should not been goin oot..I'll check that. Reason being is they are both non-human!! Piano being MIDI based and drums comin from Mr Zoom himself...the RT123! It may be a glitch when I recorded it, caused a dropout or somethin and knocked oot the timing.

I'll check that tho and thanks for your comments..all welcome and most appreciated.

Cheers...

very mellow and soulful sounding. I like the vocals quite a bit, they have a kind of John Lennon thing going on there. I do agree with Tony's comment about the lead being a bit hot. I did notice a guitar timing problem around 3:15, but otherwise this song was pulled off well. Cool, mon.

Cheers TCB...I appreciate your comments.

RE: Vocals - that's the single best comment I've had for what Im trying to do! Thanks for this. I am trying to replicate the John Lennon vocal sound in a mix of GNR/Aerosmith Rock with Beatles/60's "POP" type sound!!

So..if the vox are heading in that way I am the most chuffed guy on the planet! A step in the right direction. Lennon is my all time hero so I am going for this sound. All I need is a few killer songs lyrically in the style of King John and I will be happy for life (tho not likely but we live in hope!).

I've cut down the volume of the gtrs in the mix and tidied it up a bit but I will check this timing issue out and thanks for the advices...

Cheers...

hey man, you have a really good voice. you're right on target with hitting the notes, it's real smooth, and nothing about it annoys me.

can you tell me what processing you used on it? it sounds like is happening in a type of space i might like to emulate one day.

i'm listening through computer speakers, but the piano sounds a bit plucky and too up front. totally a matter of personal taste though. i'd try to play with distance a bit and alter the attack of it if it were my song. you could make it really smooth and it would almost blend with the vocals into a similar space. also, that hi-hat is coming through very crisply. i'd put some effects on that, try to submerge it a bit. just me, though.

the song itself is really good.

hey one other question

there's part of your progression that is very striking and which i think is part of a crash test dummies song i used to really like. any way i can get a savable copy of your mp3 so i can compare them and learn that progression somewhere down the road?

soundclick wont let me save. if you dont want to, thats cool.

40: From a fellow CTD fan. www.guitarboard.com/gtabs/1286/ and www.crashtestdummies.com/songlist.html

Which of their songs were you looking for? I love these guys. It's a shame they were basically one-hit wonders. (in the US at least...) I think they were a little too clever in their lyrics for the masses... also, who doesn't hate "mmmm mmmm mmmm mmmm" after hearing it 1000+ times on the radio?

coco,

my email addy is [email protected]. thanks!

(*great, there goes dialer.exe again, if anyone is following my spyware plight*)

tcb, thanks for the link. i loved mm mm mm mm and the superman song. i bought 'god shuffled...' but i guess it's true...nothing they ever did compares to those two songs. sure they had great lyrics, but for me it was the vibe and the progressions and melodies in those particular songs that did it for me. somehow those were sad songs, while being completely ridiculous.

and coco, the part in your song that stuck out to me seemed comparable to the part where he sings "they'd always just beeen....therrrrre"...the note you hold on makes me wanna drop down to the mm hmm hmm hmm chorus. to me that note wants to act as the fifth in the melody line, as in the CTD song. but in your song you go to a different place.
