Anyone know if you can set up the email client in mozilla to use your hotmail account?

That sucks.

I looked around a bit more and everything I found pointed to that page. Microsoft must have made some changes to the hotmail protocol/setup and they havn't caught up yet.

No, it's likely not that at all. I see it as Hotmail, being a free service, is funded by advertising, much like HRC. What microsoft doesn't want is somebody being able to use the Hotmail service without seeing the ads that are paying for the service.

Hrrmm.. last I knew you could tie into hotmail from Outlook Express without the advertisments (been a long time since I did so new versions might have embedded ads or something). It is a good point but there are many other reasons for them to change the protocol/server. They have added a whole slew of new features over the past year.

Yeah, but Outlook Express is a Microsoft product, so they already accomplished a goal by you using MS...I am not sure if that is still true either...

Yeah but I've got an butt old version of Outlook so I don't even know if it would work, or how to set it up. I assume I'd just use localhost as the POP server?

no, localhost would mean the server is on your computer.

hrr.. they might have been doing it on Linux. Every *nix system has (unless the op really didn't want it there) an SMTP server running for local mail delivery.

Try using the smtp server of your ISP. If you check thier website they should have them listed - where you send mail to and where you get your mail from can be two different providers.

I know outlook express makes it real easy to get hotmail setup and sad to say the newer version of OE hasn't had an exploit in a few months so it might actually be a usable product now.

Found this: www.boolean.ca/hotpop/

I also found this, however it requires perl, if you get in a pinch and *really* need something I might be able to run perlcc on this sucker and get a windows executable for you. Link is here: linux.cudeso.be/linuxdoc/gotmail.php

In case you havn't noticed you've definitly perked my curiosity on this issue. =)

Okay, you've got gremlins in there then - or maybe bogons. Either way step away from the computer slowly and run for your life!!

If at all possible, you are best off NOT using Outlook, Outlook Express or Internet Exploder. We all know they are full of exploits and crap, Thunderbird is the way to go.

Loki, if it says to set the server to localhost, what that generally means is that the plugin, or app you installed is a "proxy" running on your local machine, and the proxy hooks up to Hotmail, so, you set up your client to look at localhost so it can use the proxy, then the proxy does all the work, so yes, localhost is probably correct in your situation.
