i just got the roland fantom s and have been working at it as much as possible.i have all the manuals and i still have this problem, when i record say a mix of my beat melody and rhythm. then i want to add to this loop lets say,and i want to change the keyboard sound to something different you know like a bass or even a sample.i am unable to change anything without affecting the recorded sounds?if i try and change the sound it changes the instrument that was recorded. i hope i am making this clear and not just babbling. i love this site i have used it as a guest a lot and hope to now as a member. thanks ahead of time. You need to look in to MIDI channels and how to make one channel talk to that keyboard. You must be sending all channels to it when you should only be sending one...

I have never used this unit, and not even sure if I understood you correctly...but I think thats the issue.

Roland user manuals suck.

OK, to start off with, are you guys recording into a PC recording application or recording your sequance on the Fantom. If your recording into the PC, you need to make sure you set each track to a differant channel for each new sound you use. You will also need to tell the Fantom which channel you are setting the sound for. Since the Fantom is capable of playing 16 or 32 part multi-timbrel you should be able to go in and tell each channel of the 16 or 32 which sound to use.

I will wait to here exactly how you are recodring before going any further with and explanation. Hopefully this helped and you can get up and running.

It sounds like what you are recording on the fantom is not actual sounds, but midi events. So, when you change an instrument, the midi events stay the same, but now they are told to be played with a different instrument. It is my opinion that you will probably need to record whatever sequence you create as sound to either the fantom, if possible, or to a multitracker or computer or something else.

uh, yeah, that's my guess anyway.

I think what is happening is he isnt getting the new track change set-up. You need to make sure and change the track as the fantom will record I believe 16 or more tracks via midi. The manual should haev a section on using the sequancer for recording multiple parts. Anyway, you need to assign a new track with a new sound once you have your beats loop down. Then you can start fersh selecting your new sounds for the new track. It will have a differant midi channel as well which you will need to select in the fantom as well. Again there should be a section in the manual to guide you through that as well.

I do not own a fantom and am just giving you what are most common techniques for getting around in the newer work station type synths like the fantom and the Triton and such. They are all fairly the same in this respect but the manual is really going to be your key here.
