This may sound silly but what do some of you guys do to combat dust on your equipment? I clean my equipment one day and the next day it's seriously dusty again! I'm a very clean person but I can't seem to fight the dust on my equipment. Do you dudes put cloths over your equipment or what do you guys do? Thanks Guys...

haha this is a great post, as i sometimes find myself wondering if the dust problem is a personal problem i'm having and if my room is just abnormally dusty. i'm glad to see you share the same problem. sorry. :)

i bought one of those mexican blankets and one of those clint eastwood things (poncho?) that you put your head through and wear, when i was traveling out west. one's for the keyboard, the other i use on pod or old 8-track or whatever. when the room is clean, it looks like it's part of the decor. if you have small items, bandanas work well.

and oh yeah, to sit on, i have one of those huge inflatable exercise balls, which i keep underinflated so it has some give. it's the most comfortable thing to work on that i've found and allows complete freedom of movement.

Yes, I definatly have a dust problem fortymile.(sounds like a commercial.. but I use all purpose pledge..LoL) Seriously, I'm just trying to keep my stuff clean and protected. I used a sheet for awhile but as my equipment spread out I got rid of the sheet. Plus, it didn't seem to do much good anyway. How does the clint eastwood poncho work out;does it keep things clean?

This seems like a silly subject. But hey..it's true.(haha)

Dust covers, vacume cleaner. Last resort cleaning with a "wet" solution. Makes mud out of dust. Horse hair vacume cleaner attachements create the least static that I have found. Synthetic brushes are iffy. CRC electronics cleaner works pretty good if the pot wipers are impacted. Very little lubricant in CRC which helps to prohibit further contamination.

What about those compressed air can "dust removers?" Are those safe?

I built a rack with my mixer on the top, so I got a nice big piece of thick, black felt that I put right over the whole thing. It does the trick.
And it looks nice, too!

For my drumset I use this great "Shell Shine" drum shell polish made by "Groove Juice." It's great stuff. Makes my laquered set look brand new. It actually coats the wood rather than drying it out which makes scratches more visible. Highly recommended!

Yeah, I have been thinking of seeing if my mom (or wife if she learns to) sew a couple of dust covers to fit the rack ends of the desk I just built...that would rock...

Air can dust removers are fine if properly used. The plus of a vaccume is that it will pull the dust away from the equipment. Especially with equipment like a mixing board where the slider electronics are basically exposed it is good to try to pull the dirt away. Now if the sliders or pots are dirty inside than compressed air is good to blow the dust out.

yes, my clint eastwood poncho keeps the dust off. sometimes i end up wearing it, though. but i would recommend bandanas to everyone for your small items. they do the job, are cheap, come in assorted colors, and look good.

id definately recommend bandanas over bananas, which are entirely the wrong shape and design. trust me, i learnt that the hard way..

I try to keep things covered but being in here everyday it doesnt always pay to cover it up and then pull them back off again in 10 hours.

I personally try to vacume around in here at least once a month as it is very dusty in this house, especially down here. I own a very large compressor as i paint guitars as well here so I can just run a hose in here and blow like mad. Tuna will usually follow close with the Industrial vac and suck it up as I blow the crap off.

I own good covers for my keys, but rarely put em on, and I should. I also made nice covers out of towels for my racks, and rarely again put them on. And now that you guys have started this thread, I am thinking this weekedn might be a good time to clean up this mess again.

I found a big nasty spider crawling on the floor while I was working just a few minutes ago. Now it's definately time to vacuum. I greatly dislike spiders mingling with my recording equipment. I have absolutely no tolerance.

The covers are kinda like an inconvience thing for me...I'm like you Noize, I'm right back in there after awhile. Sometimes I get an idea and I would have to start uncovering things again. I might do fortymiles poncho idea.

Then again...bananas aren't so bad(hehe)

My studio's in a shed and I keep it messy enough so that dust can't get on anything....

I do have a rather large spider infestation but they prevent the flies and ladybug from making too much noice by colliding with the one light bulb... I also have a family of woodchucks I've been trying to kill off for the past few years living under the shed... one was very pissed to wake from hybernation with me blaring some hardcore music... I feel stupid that I didn't sample all the growling and hissing...We still get into floor pounding matches like bad apartment neighbors.

I also had a house mouse last year that lived in the ceiling and would go scurring around the tops of the wall on the auralex foam I put up. Thats when I learned the hard way to not keep food on the desk overnight... you want to complain about dust? You should have seen all the mouse crap I had to clean up...

Zek,

That is hilarious! (so is my spelling) And by the way..... Way Cool! (been hanging aroud that young rock band too much) Reverts back to old fart affect: Wy that rminds me o when I was a liven in northern Michigan. Buco critters to co-habitat with. Lots 0 friends everywhere! Once opened the garage door and a skunk ran out and over my foot. Friendly little guy. That would be the kinda place I could really chill out and create!

zek, go to the local home depot, menards or what have you, and get a bug repeller. They create a sonic frequency that you can't hear but it repels mice, spiders, roaches and stuff. I had a mouse or two, plus a few bugs, in my garage over the winter, I got one and by the end of the day I saw a notciable difference by the end of the week, well...haven't seen one since...mouse, bug or anything, in my garage.

Really? I always wondered whether those things actually did anything... Now I might actually buy one. I hope they don't give you cancer or something, though. You never know.

As for spiders eating the bugs we don't like... The spiders ARE the bugs I don't like! Haha, but seriously, I don't have a bug problem unless I let the basement go unvacuumed for like 2 or 3 weeks. Then I get spiders... First just the thin ones, then the thick ones, and then I finally see some ants, and today I found a cricket?!? Well, I'm fine with sucking up the other bugs myself, but I'm just arachnaphobic.

for those of you who are talking about using a vacuum cleaner, make sure you understand that they create static electricity and are not meant for use near sensitive electronics! that's why the computer stores sell those compressed air cans, which are great when followed up by that vacuum cleaner. a rag with a weak rubbing alcohol mix (add water if it's strong) is good for mixers and things...doesn't eat the writing, but dries up nice.

the problem with canned air is that there are a bunch of morons who spray them sideways or upside down... which is one of the factors that led me to quit an HDTV technician position. The moron training me didn't understand that when the circut boards turn white it's because they've been frozen and he he would constantly have me hold something and then freeze my hands by spraying whatever he had me hold... and no it wasn't some "new guy initiation" which I first thought ... he just didn't know anybetter and he didn't believe me when I told him.

Concerning vacuum cleaners. Make sure that all your knobs and buttons and little pieces are tight or they will end up in the bag and almost impossible to find once they get sucked up. Learned this lesson just the other day.
