The Porpoise Sings Again... Critiques?

Hey Guys,
Here is a new tune for those of you who have the time to check it out. I've been mixing and mastering this one for weeks, and working with Har-Bal to try to get things to sound just right. I tried a lot of new stuff and I think it really paid off. There are no vocals on it yet, but there should be soon enough. If anybody wants to hear it again when it's done, I'll repost it. Anyway, I'm mostly looking for a critique of the production job, but comments on the song are also welcome (My brother wrote it as well as played guitar, and I did drums and bass). It's called "Make Mine Yours" and it's up at NoWhereRadio:

I listened to Make Mine Yours and the other songs at NoWhereRadio. You have a very slick, polished sound. What instruments do you play? What sounds are programmed? Its all good, maybe a bit too perfect for this type of music. Just a comment, not a criticism.

I do want to give you some honest feedback though. I think you nedd to loose the nasal vocals. Its very irritating to listen to when the music behind it is so good. I'm no singer, so I cn't give you any tips, except sing from your chest, not your mouth and nose. You can hit and hold pitch good, its only the nasal sound that needs work. Just my opinion.

Oh yeah, don't spend too much time 'mastering' that piece until you get the vocals recorded. Your going to have to re-mix to get them to sit well, you know? Please don't take offense, I'm tryng to give you some honest input, just my opinion. Keep up the Great work !!

Uh, yeah, chalk another one up to porpoise. This sounds real sweet. Can't wait to hear it with vocals. The only thing I would say is that the kick drum seems to be lacking that bass oomph, but I can still hear it through the mix from the beater sound. Then again I am listening on lofi stream, so that might be the problem. Really like this one alot.

Thanks! In regard to the instrument playing, I play bass and drums, as well as backup vocals. None of the stuff is programmed. The drums on Waiting for Words to Come are done by someone else.
The only reason I spent so long premastering was because I wanted to get the hang of Har-Bal. I'm fine with doing it over again since I already did it about 5 times and I'm still not quite happy :)

Coolo- I agree about the kick drum. I think the wrong frequency is being emphasized in the low end which is keeping it from coming through as clearly as it should be. I need to go back and give it a more extreme EQ job, then be a little more careful about it not loosing its punch when I'm compressing and maximizing the song.

Yup, nice one Porp. Love the arrangement again as with the rest of your stuff. Im with coolo, cant wait to hear it with vox. Agree also on the kick, it comes through here and there but something in the low end is kinda mushing it.

As for the rest of the mix, very tight nicely defined parts in there and good seperation.

Cool, Noize- Always good to hear from ya! Anything specific you might suggest to help out that "mushy" kick?

Porp, if I get some time this weekend I'll run it through Sound Forge and see if I can find an exact spot to give it a bit more low side punch. Not exactly sure why it is doing that as I didnt hear anything that would cover it, so maybe it is just missing a bit as it was recorded or something.
