Getting vocals in the mix

I have songs(actually it seems all of them)where the vocals either stand out to much or not enough. The style of music is guitar rock like Third Eye Blind, Hoobastank, hair metal kinda stuff.

I just can't seem to get everything to mesh well. They sound good by themselves but when I add vocals one ot the other stands out t0oo much.

This is actually driving me crazy. I use Sonar 3 Producer if that helps any.

Add reverb, compression, and play with the eq. Try bringing down the presence a bit with the eq- maybe use a de-esser plug-in. Make some room in the mix for the vocals by notching out some of the frequencies in the guitar tracks where the vocals are most prominant. Then bring down the volume of the vocals so they sit in their space. Of course that probably sounds easier than it is... There's been talk about this many times before, so try a search on the topic through the forum (button on left of screen- second to last). There should be a lot more specific information on what types of reverb / compression settings. I know I've gone through it in more depth before.

vocals and drum overhead tracks can fight with each other. cut the overheads a bit if you need more vocal presence in addition to the EQ tricks.

panning will help too. if you have everything in the middle then they will fight for space there too, especially if they share similar freq range. clean up the eq's and try to give things their space. to piggyback on what minkus said, if you have 2 overhead tracks (left and right) try panning them out a little to give more room to the vox.

Yeah, to be a bit more specific about the eq: Notch out right around 2 khz (small-medium Q) in the guitars to help bring out the vocals (It also makes the guitars less harsh sounding)
