i'm using cakewalk 2004 xl.

at the bottom right there are two small meters, one named 'cpu' and the other 'disk'

when one of them is maxed out, the software has a dropout. what tiggers these meters?

Any sound from cakewalk will trigger those meters. They're showing you what percentage of the processor you're using. Hence the reason for the dropout. Once you take up too much of the processor time, it drops the unnecessary processes.

Yup, the one marked CPU is for the amount of processing power it is eating up, and if it hits the max you can crash. The other marked disk is for the amount of disc space you have left to record on.
