I don't have some to try this out on but was wondering if two 57's in an X/Y pattern on a single 12" amp speaker could produce a good sound? I would pan them hard l/r.

I use an sm57 for acoustic guitar stuff... 2 inputs, one through the pickup and one through the sm57, blended about 50/50, sounds great to my ears... never tried 2 mics.

I would think it would be fine. You could just use one mic and pan the original track hard right and a slight delayed track hard left. EQ one side a little different. I've had great results doing that in the past. Keep the delay between 10 and 30 ms, and you will be fine.

Yes, i wouldn't bother putting two mics on the same speaker cone unless one of them was farther away from it to catch some "air" in the sound. Putting the mics in an xy pattern close to the speaker might give you too much of an off-axis sound- a little less direct and in your face, which could be fine if that's what you're looking for. I've put one Sm57 on a 10" Princeton speaker and gotten monster tones just by moving it 2" from the center and about 5-10 degrees off axis. It all depends on the speaker, too- some of them sound better straight on, but a lot of them benefit by adjusting the angle to take a little sting out of the sound.

also agree with karetaker on panning the original track hard both ways- it gives you flexibility to tweak and adjust. And the slight delay on one side can make even a small amp sound HUGE. Point is, experiment with the mic placement- you'll probably find something you like with just one mic.
