If you had the option of miking a drumset with either 2 Oktava mk012's ($100 each) or one Rode NT2 and One Groove Tubes GT66 ($500 each), which would you choose? I'm trying to decide which is a more practical option. I suppose it would be nice to have two similar mics, but the NT2 and GT66 are such great mics...
Oh-- and I'll be micing the toms with SM57's. I've been finding that condensors pick up way too much bleed-in noise. Would you agree? I was using the GT and NT2 for tom mics with the Oktavas for overheads before, but I was having major phase issues and such.

Jan 21, 2004 06:18 am You want to try and keep overhead mics as matched pairs, for pretty obvious reasons - however, in your circumstance I would use the NT-2 and GT66 as the overheads and then spend a while equing one mic to sound like the other in a pair of cans (pan on hard left, one hard right and then EQ one side until it matches the other).
And yes, 57's are great on toms - nice and close to the top skin pointing "through" the tom itself.
jues.
Jan 21, 2004 10:37 am Okay, thanks. What exactly do you mean by "pointing through" the tom? Pointed down toward the head?
Also-- If you had the choice of either an oktava 012 or a trusty SM57 on the snare, which would you choose? (I'm thinking the 57 is still the way to go).
Jan 21, 2004 10:39 am snare? One 57 on top and one on the bottom...at least thats what I have done a lot and it's worked.

Jan 21, 2004 01:25 pm i got y first last month - loving it!
Jan 21, 2004 04:49 pm Yes, they are awesome. It feels kind of weird when you use an $80 microphone on half the stuff you're recording when you've got a $500 one at your disposal as well-- But whaterver sounds good goes!

Jan 21, 2004 07:39 pm Dynamics work much better for close miccing for the reason you stated, they dont grab all the extra noise. Iam with jues on the EQ trick to make the unmatched mics work for overheads. But if you can spare the money it is best to get a pair that are the same. I have used the 012 as overheads and they work great, didnt have much problem with phase or anything.
