vocals in the headphones mon

So, here's the setup:
I'm recording vocals into a microphone which sends the signal to a dedicated preamp, which sends the signal to my Delta 66 which subsequently records the signal to my hard drive. While recording, my multitracker is also playing the music I'm singing over, and sending that signal through my Delta 66 and into my Behringer mixer which sends the signal to my headphones.

My question is, how can I have the signal that I'm in the process of recording play itself in the headphones as I record it. Basically, I'd like to hear my voice along with the accompanying music while recording. Any ideas?

split the line from the preamp and run one to the mixer and one to the sound card...or, in the software route that signal back out of a Delta output...

Yeah, I'd like to be able to do it via software if possible, but, I'm not sure how to do that. Would I have to give it it's own line and have the mixer mix the signals, or would I be able to do it in Cool Edit and have the signals mixed before it hits the mixer?

Well, it's totally dependant on the software you are using, but for many it's just like a mixer, you can assign that channel to go to different out busses...just gotta look for that.

so, when you say software, do you mean the multitrack software like CEP, or do you mean the M-Audio mixer software?

like CEP.

By the way, if it's not a lot of trouble, I'd kinda like one of those CD's you talk about in your profile you have finished...

hey Noize, I guess you listened to the whole CD (The vocal recording on the last track where I ask people to burn the CD and give it to friends is sooooooo poor cuz I was just trying to get it done).

Anyhow, yeah, Noize, if you want you can burn dB a copy. That would be a lot easier on me. But if it's any trouble, I'd be more than happy to send dB a copy (and anyone else who might be interested).

Oh, by the way, are there any cool edit users who know how to do what I'm talking about. I used to be able to do it easily when I was recording with the SBLive, but I can't seem to be able to get it to work with the Delta66. I tried messing with the track output, but it doesn't seem to make a difference. Hmmm.

Hey coolo not trouble at all. And I dont need to send it to him, I can jsut hand it to him when he stops by or when I stop by. We only live about ten minutes away from each other.

And dang straight Ive listened to the whole thing, more then once even. I keep copy in the van as well as in the studio, and my son finally burned his own copy so he'd quit taken mine outa the van.

Im hoping to get some time in the next week or two as well to mess with the midi ya sent me several months ago. I havent forgotten about em, just to dang busy to get anything done I wanna do.

I know you have it, thats why I want it, you played a couple tracks and I thought they were pretty cool...but didn't know if Coolo wanted to do that, so ya, a copy is fine, I'll get it this weekend when I come to pick up the bundle file of the My Generation collab...

Hey coolo, what program did you rint your label and cover from? And if it is one I have or can get, do you still have the layout file for it? That way I can print dB the same cover and such. Otherwise I can scan it at hi res and do a lay ot in what I have.

Yeah, I used Adobe Illustrator. I think I still have the file, so I can probably email you a .pdf version.

uh if there's any further suggestions on the question, that would be cool too...

Ya, the .pdf file should work fine. Then dB can have the original cover art for the for his copy as well.

Thanx

do a search at google for "amking pdf's" or something like that. There are plugins for apps like MS Word and such. alternatively you can get Adobe Acrobat (NOT inexpensive) and Adobe Distiller and that will allow to make pdf's as well.

Well, just in case anyone cares, I figured this one out. I ran another cable from the delta 66 outs into the mixer and assigned that out to send the signal from the delta in that had the vocal signal. If that makes sense. Voila vocals in the headphone whilst I'm recording.

Dude, I listen to half you CD today. w00t!

Very cool stuff coolo, not my chosen style of music generally, which I knew before getting it, but surely cool(o) for what it is. Whether chosen style or not, anyone can pick up on good music.

kudos.

Sweet, glad ya got it figured coolo. I am partial to the instrumental parts myself, but I do also like the rest of it as well. But then ya all new that allready anyway. And ya, I am one of those peeps that dont really have a prefered style of music, I like it all.

Cool, thanks for the kind words. I'm glad you like it. It's funny how music styles evolve. That CD was me learning how to create music. Nowadays, I'm much lazier than I used to be in the composition dept. and much more stringent on trying to find the right mix. My next project is going to be a double EP, I'm thinking about 7 tracks each, with the first being all instrumentals, and the second being songs with lyrics. I'm pretty much expecting to have it done by the end of the year.
