anybody listening to anything new & cool?
I've spent the last month listening to an album from Sufjan Stevens called "Greetings from Michigan" that I can't put down. It has everything: obnoxiously long song titles with lots of parentheses and exclamation points, like "Detroit, Lift Up Your Weary Head! (Rebuild! Restore! Reconsider!)", and lots of cool instruments like banjos, pianos, acoustic guitars and horns, wierd time signatures ala Dave Brubeck, and it also has what could be the saddest song ever written ("Romulus"). This is supposedly album #1 in a series of (potentially) 50, 1 dedicated to each of the states in the union. He started with his home state of Michigan and its a weird mix of personal accounts, fiction, history, and state-of-the-state kind of themes. Its a little bit folk, a little bit jazz fusion, and a little bit confusing...but I'm absolutely addicted to it!
I'm so excited about it that I just had to share :)

Dec 10, 2003 12:07 pm No.... I got the Crash Test Dummies "A Worm's Life" not long ago, and thought it absolutely sucked.... a shame, I've always liked CTD. Other than that, haven't heard any new stuff for a while. Got some Gilberto Gil and Miles Davis' "Birth of Cool" coming from the library, haven't heard them yet.

Dec 10, 2003 12:45 pm I still haven't moved past Kind of Blue from Miles Davis. Its the only Davis I've really listened to. I could listen to So What on repeat for hours! OK, maybe AN hour :)
I haven't heard of Gilberto Gil, what's he like?

I don't know much about him, but I heard 3 amazingly cool jazz fusion pieces on NPR that got me interested in him about 2-3 weeks ago.

Dec 10, 2003 01:24 pm Hmmm, I'm definitely curious. I'll have to try to find something from his early works. Thanks for the heads-up!

Dec 10, 2003 05:49 pm Well, not really new, but, my last two "in love with" albums: Getting to it Christian McBride and Cyrus Chestnut by the same. Espicially Getting to it. Those Philly bassists!
Dec 11, 2003 01:32 am yes. i mean, this is not 'exactly' what i was looking for, but i'm pleasantly surprised. the band is called Isis. they're progressive metal, i guess you'd call it. the album called 'oceanic' flows very nicely. a lot of nice instrumental tracks that really work. and enough hardness to feel edgy. a bit unusual, and pretty good.
