Bulletproof and versatile! You're gonna love it! You'll need to fashion a pop filter if you want to sing through it though...I learned that the first night I had it.

i see what ya mean about neading a pop shield though - its much more prone to pops and tuts than my other mics...

ahhh, the pencil tRick...explained to me by Jues, is as follows :

stick a pencil over the end of the mic with bluetac. stops blasts of air aparently.

I tried the pencil trick on my sm57. It worked, sort of. I could tell a difference in sound quality - sounded less "direct" than without the pencil. I still got a couple of pops every now and then, too. Make your own popfilter instead, it's easy... you just can't take the ugly thing up on stage with you when finished. ...though, now that I think about it, if you used black pantyhose material and painted the wooden hoop black, that would make it look a lot better....

That would generate some interesting conversations though, dont ya think. :-)

Its surprising what happens when you hang weird stuff on your stage gear.

yeah pop filters are easy to make, and if you put some time into em you can even make em look good. As far as weird things on stage go... that sounds like it should be a whole new thread.

I think you'll like it alot flame. It's a very versatle mic imo. I've had mine for about 23 years and it still works as well as the day I bought it. I had a condenser mic as well but rarely used it cause I sounded horrible on it, and I paid twice what I paid for the SM57.

It's still the only mic I own and use.

SM58's better for vocals, 57 is more for micing amps/drums etc..

As far as helping out a 57 in a live situation if you're using it for vocals, get a wind screen. Costs pennies, covers up most of the 'issues', the sound man should take care of the rest.

No the ModCave silly! And flame Ive been meaning to ask you, and now that Tuna saw the big picture of it in your profile. What on gods green earth is that thing you use for an avatar. And what is he, (if indeed it is human and male) wearing on his head. It looks like some fishbowl thing with a nibben stuck in it.

So if he hatched for a chocolate egg, how do yo know his name is Mr. Valvehead? Did you just come up with that? Or does he really exist somewhere with the name Mr. Valvehead?

Im not trying to be obnoxious or anything, I just have this deep seated desire to know the origin of the name. Call me psychotic but I really need to know..............????????????

I'm with Noize2u on this one... I wondered what your avatar was too, flame. Looks kind of like a pokemon-style Santa Claus wearing a pope hat. :)

OK flame, so now theres a bunch of us. How did it get its name? I understand the chocolate egg thing as there is bizare stuff over hear like that as well. I agree with the santa wearing a pope hat as well. But it resembles a gremlin of sorts and what about the smurf blue hand? And what is with the nibben thing on the pope hat? Is that the valve you refer to in Mr. Valvehead?

ooops, didnt even see these - didnt know anyone cared that much...

erm, i made his name up cos i thought it suited him, its not really a valve on his head but it does light up and the little hat thing matches the rest of his outfit. the blue hands are his gloves, which match his socks.

clearer?

flame: "clearer?"

The mystery is solved at last. We can all rest easier knowing the origins of flame's avatar. :)

tony: "i made my pop shield on my 57 with shipping foam. cut a square, hollow out, slide on....."

man, that's an idea... never thought of that. and I'm sitting here with a block of the perfect foam for that, too. I do believe I'll try that out myself, that homemade popfilter I've got now tends to wobble at the wrong times.

hmmm interesting, I'm thinking about about a coathanger cut and bent with a piece of pantyhose stretched around it and maybe a way to hook the coathanger to the mic. thx for the ideas guys.

Hey crash, I use that exact same popfilter method for my mic... it works well, I'm always having to futz with the coathanger to get it back into position. You may want to try tony's method first, since if cut right, the filter won't slip at all. Just a suggestion. If you do go with the pantyhose idea, check this out first:

Hope this helps!

Seriously, its worth ponying up the $15 to buy a cheapie.

I spent $14 to buy this exact model at my local music shop: www.loudkaraoke.com/equip_details.asp?ID=AWS404 Its the least amount of materials that a company could put into such a product and still call it a pop filter. It swivels at the clamp and at the screen part and you can clip it right on to your mic clip.

Just imagine not singing into hosiery!

But if you do go the panty hose route, be sure not to use the crotch pad part.

Tadpui,
I think I'll going to go the hosiery route for now, its cheap and theres something about a wet spot on panty hose that excites me.

Yup, nuttin like Ode-da-Fish to bring out the soul in a love song performed by a male vocalist. Well.....come to think of it 10% of female vocalists too!.....But then thats augmented by the 10% of male vocalists that don't care for fish..... Let's see then there's the take it or leave it crowd. Oh good grief... Much too confusing...much too confusing!

PS: about your choice for the M57. I personaly agree with you the 58 uses the same capsule, electronics etc. Per Shure the only difference is the extended screen on the 57 effectively pushing the capsule back a little and limiting proximity effect. Especially for recording, I would rather have that. I can effectively add proximity effect in software in a number of ways. I can't take it out. I can see for a performance mic a vocalist would probably like the 58 a little better as there would be more control over the effect.
